No: the “three flops in a row” framing no longer fits the available results. Sydney Sweeney’s awards-positioned boxing drama Christy earned about $2 million worldwide, according to the Associated Press, but The Housemaid went on to become a major commercial success. The Oscar-buzz label referred to Christy’s awards-season positioning; it does not mean Sweeney received an Oscar nomination.
What happened to the “three flops in a row” claim?
It is not a sound description of the current record. The claim appears to treat a run of disappointing releases as an ongoing trend, but The Housemaid subsequently performed strongly at the box office. The Associated Press reported on January 6, 2026, that the film had earned more than $75 million domestically and $133 million worldwide after 17 days. Its reported production budget was $35 million. A later report by TheWrap on March 30, 2026, put its worldwide gross at nearly $400 million.
These are figures reported at different points in the film’s theatrical run, not competing estimates for the same date. They establish that The Housemaid was a commercial hit; they do not make every recent Sweeney film a success or settle whether earlier films were profitable.
How did Christy perform?
Christy, a biographical boxing drama starring Sweeney, was positioned as an awards hopeful. The AP reported a worldwide gross of about $2 million. That is a weak commercial result, but the figure alone does not reveal the film’s final financial outcome: the available reporting here does not provide a full account of marketing costs, theatrical revenue splits, or distribution expenses.

Keep the awards framing separate from the box office. Calling Christy an “awards-hopeful” describes the attention it received around awards season; it does not establish an Oscar nomination, a win, or a current likelihood of either.
How do the reported figures compare?
| Film | Reported result | Timing and context |
|---|---|---|
| Christy | About $2 million worldwide | AP report published January 6, 2026; awards-hopeful positioning, not an Oscar outcome. |
| The Housemaid | More than $75 million domestic; $133 million worldwide; reported $35 million production budget | AP report published January 6, 2026, after 17 days in release. |
| The Housemaid | Nearly $400 million worldwide | TheWrap report published March 30, 2026; later reported total, not the 17-day figure. |
Box-office gross is not the same as profit. The figures above also differ in scope: the early Housemaid report gives both domestic and worldwide totals, while the later report gives an approximate worldwide gross.

What does the sequel announcement mean?
Lionsgate announced development of The Housemaid’s Secret, with Sweeney and director Paul Feig expected to return. The AP reported that the sequel is based on the second book in Freida McFadden’s trilogy. “Expected to return” describes the announcement, not proof that production or release has already occurred.
In the AP report, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chairman Adam Fogelson said audiences had responded to the first film and wanted to know what happened next. That is a studio executive’s promotional assessment, rather than independent audience research.

What is the fairest takeaway?
Christy had awards-season attention but a reported worldwide gross of about $2 million. The Housemaid later became a substantial box-office success, with TheWrap reporting nearly $400 million worldwide in March 2026. So the headline’s “fourth flop” implication is not supported as a current prediction, and “Oscar buzz” should not be mistaken for an Oscar nomination.
