Spoilers for Happy Gilmore 2: Julie Bowen returns as Virginia Venit, and Virginia’s death is part of the sequel’s early story. Adam Sandler says the choice gives the older Happy a painful loss to face and shows how deeply he remains devoted to Virginia.
Why does Happy never move on from Virginia?
In a July 30, 2025 report, Parade attributed the explanation to Sandler’s interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He said the filmmakers knew Happy needed to overcome something, and chose the loss of someone he loved as the emotional challenge. They also wanted to show that Happy remained devoted to Virginia and could not move on from his love for her.

As Parade reproduced Sandler’s answer: “We just knew we needed Happy to have to overcome something in this story. There’s nothing more painful than losing someone you love. Just wanted to show how dedicated Happy was to Julie’s character, and he would never be able to move on from it and the love he had for her. We just thought that was something to have going with the new story of where Happy is at his age. We’re older now, so we’ve seen people go through stuff.”
His explanation is about the character’s arc: the sequel gives an older Happy a loss that shapes his story. It is not a statement about Sandler’s own personal life or a general claim about how people grieve.

What happens to Julie Bowen’s character?
Bowen reprises Virginia Venit, Happy’s wife from the first film. Virginia dies early in Happy Gilmore 2, setting up the loss Sandler describes. The available account does not establish the precise circumstances or details of the scene, so those should not be inferred from Sandler’s explanation.

In the same report, Sandler praised Bowen and said he likes working with her, referring to the first Happy Gilmore and Hubie Halloween. That appreciation sits alongside his story rationale: Bowen’s return lets the sequel make Virginia’s relationship with Happy central to his emotional journey.
