Two brief lines from the film’s official Japanese distributor capture that tension: one challenges self-serving behavior; the other asks whether friendship is possible at all.
Why these lines matter in the story
Directed by Naoko Yamada at Kyoto Animation, the 2016 animated film adapts Yoshitoki Ōima’s manga. Shoya first bullies Shoko Nishimiya, a deaf classmate who has transferred into his elementary school. When his classmates turn against him, he becomes isolated. Years later, he seeks Shoko out and tries to face what happened and reconnect with her and others.
The Japan Media Arts Festival describes the film as a story of a young man coming to terms with a young woman, his peers, and himself. Its description also emphasizes the difficulty and value of communication between people, including the film’s realistic depiction of sign language. That context matters: the quotes below are moments in a particular story, not clinical guidance about deafness, bullying, or mental health.
“Stop acting like such a good guy”
「いい奴ぶってんじゃねーよ。」
A rough translation is “Stop acting like such a good guy.” The Japanese distributor, Shochiku, includes this short line in its official synopsis. The English wording here is an editorial gloss, not verified licensed subtitle text.

The line cuts through the idea that a good intention—or a visible attempt to make things right—automatically deserves praise. Shoya’s wish to repair the past cannot erase the bullying that came before it. The challenge is whether his actions are genuinely about listening and taking responsibility, rather than seeking a quick path back to feeling like a good person.
“Can Nishimiya and I become friends?”
「俺と西宮、友達になれるかな?」
A rough translation is “Can Nishimiya and I become friends?” Shochiku’s Japanese synopsis verifies the line; this English rendering is not established as the film’s exact subtitle wording.
The question is powerful because friendship is framed as a possibility, not something Shoya can claim as a reward for apologizing. Reconnection depends on Shoko’s feelings and choices too. The line holds hope and uncertainty together: Shoya can try to change how he treats her, but he cannot decide on her behalf what their relationship will become.
How the film’s wider context deepens the quotes
Japan’s Ministry of Education included A Silent Voice in educational material connected to bullying, children’s SOS, suicide prevention, special needs education, and understanding disability. Its campaign poster carries the Japanese phrase 「勇気をもって心の声を伝えよう」, which can be translated editorially as “Have the courage to express what is in your heart.” The English is a translation for context, not a verified official English version.

- A Silent Voice The Movie
The film’s relevance to those subjects does not make it a complete account of any one of them. Its focus is a group of characters negotiating harm, communication, isolation, and the possibility of change. The Japan Media Arts Festival’s description of communication as difficult but precious is a useful lens for reading both lines: neither a performance of goodness nor a wish for friendship substitutes for understanding another person.
