Ben Cousins and Samantha Jade had not met before joining Australia’s 2024 season of Dancing With the Stars. They connected at the cast’s first meeting, with their shared Perth roots helping spark a friendship that grew alongside their competition, according to a PerthNow interview published on 7 August 2024.
How Ben Cousins and Samantha Jade first met
Jade said she walked over to introduce herself at the cast meeting. Cousins recognised her because she was from Perth, and told PerthNow he had followed her career with particular interest.

“I love Samantha, I have admired what she’s done from afar for a long time,” Cousins told PerthNow. “Being a Perth girl, you take a little bit of extra interest and follow her pursuits.”
Jade recalled being surprised that he knew who she was: “I was like, ‘I’m just going to go say hi, introduce myself,’ and he was like, ‘I know who you are because you’re from Perth,’” she told the outlet. “And I was like, ‘Oh, you know who I am? That’s so cool, I didn’t know you realised!’”
#1 Best Overall
The interview described them as the season’s two Perth-raised contestants. Their connection began as fellow cast members, rather than as longtime friends who entered the show together.
They were supportive rivals in the 2024 competition
Both contestants reached the semifinals, but they had different performance backgrounds and partners. Cousins, the 2005 Brownlow Medal winner and former West Coast Eagles premiership player, danced with Siobhan Power. Jade partnered with Gustavo Viglio.

| Contestant | Dance partner | Reported result |
|---|---|---|
| Samantha Jade | Gustavo Viglio | 39 out of 40 for a Cha Cha Cha |
| Ben Cousins | Siobhan Power | 21 out of 40 for a Viennese Waltz |
PerthNow reported the scores on 4 August 2024 as the pair advanced to the semifinals. They are results for those dances, not overall season statistics. Cousins had previewed the show in June as a new challenge, while Jade praised the adjustment he was making from football to dancing: “I can’t imagine me trying to play football; it would be just so out of his comfort zone, but he’s killing it,” she told PerthNow.
What the reports establish about their friendship
The contemporary interview supports saying Cousins and Jade formed a friendship during the 2024 show and encouraged one another while competing. It does not establish whether they remain close now. A later PerthNow report about Cousins reflecting on his experience after semifinal elimination focused on his friendship with dance partner Siobhan Power, not on his relationship with Jade.
