Below are 98 ideas for ceremonies, first dances, and other intimate moments, including vocal songs and instrumentals. Choose a live arrangement if you want a musician to perform it, or a recording if you want a particular artist or production; those are different planning choices, not interchangeable versions.
How to choose a song you both want to hear
- Start with the moment. A processional, first dance, signing of the register, and dinner background each call for different energy and length. Think about whether you want guests listening closely or simply sharing the atmosphere.
- Check the lyrics and personal meaning. A song can sound romantic while its words tell a different story. Read the lyrics and ask what the song means to each of you; a shared memory can matter more than a conventional wedding choice.
- Pick the version, not just the title. A familiar song may have a distinct acoustic recording, cover, or instrumental arrangement. Check the performer and recording before adding it to a playlist or sending it to a musician.
- Match the arrangement to the performer. Wedding singer Aaron Norton’s rule of thumb is that songs conceived around guitar and voice or piano and voice often translate more naturally to a solo acoustic set than heavily orchestrated recordings. That is one performer’s advice, not a guarantee: a stripped-down arrangement of a densely produced song will sound different from the original.
- Try a short-list listening session. Each partner can nominate a few songs, then listen together to the exact versions you might use. Narrow the list by moment, tempo, lyrics, and whether the song suits a voice-and-instrument performance.
The Knot’s acoustic wedding recommendations present live ceremony musicians and a curated playlist as options, and group song ideas into editorial selections, country, popular, and instrumental categories. Its page was updated August 22, 2024; its count is an editorial list count, not a measure of what couples prefer. See The Knot’s acoustic wedding song list.

Live acoustic performance or a recording?
A live musician can adapt tempo, length, and dynamics to the room and the ceremony, and can make a familiar song feel personal. A recording gives you a specific artist, vocal, or production that a solo performer may not reproduce. Choose based on what matters most for that moment, then confirm the arrangement and practical details with your musician or DJ.

- For live music: send the exact song and version, ask whether the performer knows it, and discuss key, tempo, length, and any requested changes. Ask for a sample if the arrangement is important to you.
- For a playlist: check the track, artist, and edit in advance, and arrange a reliable playback setup with someone responsible for starting and stopping it at the right time.
- For a mix: use live performance for the ceremony or first dance and recordings for moments where you want a particular version or broader production.
Playing the songs yourselves
If one of you plays guitar, Hal Leonard’s Acoustic Guitar Wedding (Songbook) is described by Apple Books as 30 matrimonial favorites arranged for acoustic guitar. It is a separate songbook, not a collection of all 98 ideas above. Hal Leonard also lists wedding songbooks in multiple instrument and format categories. View the Apple Books listing or browse Hal Leonard’s wedding songbooks.
If you cannot agree on a first-dance song, choose a short list based on what each of you connects with, then listen to the exact recordings together. The right choice need not be the most obvious wedding song; it should be one both of you are glad to hear again.
