It is the series’ first major-character death, a deliberate sacrifice that 9-1-1 creator Tim Minear said was meant to restore real stakes to future emergencies.
Who dies in “Lab Rats”?
Bobby Nash, played by Peter Krause, dies in “Lab Rats,” the second part of the “Contagion” story. The episode aired on ABC on April 17, 2025, and is listed as TV-14. Its central crisis begins when a fire at a biolab traps members of the 118; Athena and Buck race to reach them. Rotten Tomatoes’ episode listing summarizes that rescue effort.
The team secures the sole antiviral dose for Chimney. Bobby then reveals that he was infected too and had concealed it. He returns to the lab and accepts the fatal outcome so Chimney can survive, according to TheWrap’s recap and interview with Minear. The scene makes Bobby’s death a conscious sacrifice—not evidence that he wanted to die at that point in his life.
Why Bobby’s death is a series first
TheWrap describes Bobby’s death as the show’s first major-character death. That distinction matters: it does not mean 9-1-1 had never shown a death, only that the series had not previously killed off a central character of Bobby’s stature.
#1 Best Overall
The episode is disturbing because it turns an emergency-of-the-week premise into an irreversible loss for the core ensemble. The risk is no longer limited to victims or guest characters; the people viewers expect to return from each call can also die.
Why did 9-1-1 kill off Bobby?
Minear told TheWrap the decision was intended to make future emergencies feel consequential: “I needed a major character death if I wanted, going forward, for the audience to feel any kind of suspense or that there were real stakes involved in any of the cases.” He also said the biolab crisis offered the chance for an epic death, and that placing it before the season finale gave the series room to show the immediate aftermath.
Rank #2
In interviews with TV Insider and TVLine, Minear described Bobby’s death as a creative choice that would affect every character’s story. He said he had considered other deaths and wanted a loss that would create story across the ensemble. He also framed Bobby’s sacrifice as the culmination of a longer arc: Bobby began with a death wish but had come to value his life. Minear said Bobby did not want to die when he made the sacrifice.
Was Peter Krause leaving the show?
Minear said the decision was not prompted by Krause wanting to leave. Asked by TV Insider whether Krause wanted out, Minear answered, “No, it was a creative decision,” and said nobody wanted Peter to leave. This is Minear’s account of the decision, not independently verified employment information.
