What each shortlisted novel offers
The Wren, The Wren — Anne Enright
Enright’s novel is the shortlist’s family-saga choice: a story shaped across generations and by the relationships that connect them. It is a natural starting point for readers drawn to layered family histories rather than a single, tightly bounded episode. The Guardian also identifies it as a multigenerational saga. The Guardian’s shortlist coverage
Brotherless Night — V. V. Ganeshananthan
Sashi’s narrative opens in New York in 2009, then returns to her childhood in Jaffna and the Sri Lankan civil war. That movement connects a personal and family story with a broader political catastrophe. The judges selected it as the 2024 winner; Chair Monica Ali praised its attention to intimate and large-scale tragedy, vivid sense of time and place, and moral scrutiny. Those remarks are the judges’ endorsement, not a neutral critical consensus. The Women’s Prize winner announcement

Restless Dolly Maunder — Kate Grenville
Based on Grenville’s maternal grandmother’s life, the novel begins on a sheep farm in New South Wales in 1881. Its central thread is a woman’s pursuit of independence within the limits placed on her. Readers interested in historical fiction about women’s ambition and difficult choices may find its premise especially compelling. The Guardian’s shortlist coverage
Enter Ghost — Isabella Hammad
Sonia, a British-Palestinian actor, visits her sister in Israel. The premise places family and personal identity alongside a politically charged setting. The Prize’s broader account of the shortlist points to identity, migration, race, family and political upheaval as recurring lenses; those themes provide context without reducing Hammad’s novel to a single issue.
