2024 ACM Awards Review: A Cute Show With Mostly Predictable Results

The 59th Academy of Country Music Awards were an easygoing, performance-heavy night with Lainey Wilson taking home the biggest honors. Reba McEntire kept the proceedings welcoming, and the collaborations offered the liveliest surprises; the winners, though, made for a largely familiar awards-show finish. “Cute” and “predictable” are my read of the ceremony, not a measured audience consensus.

What happened at the 2024 ACM Awards?

Hosted by Reba McEntire on May 16, 2024, the 59th ACM Awards took place at the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas. The Academy of Country Music described the broadcast as a two-hour, commercial-free concert event. It reported 18 performances from 19 artists, a format that put live music and pairings at the center of the evening.

The Academy said the event streamed to an international audience across more than 240 countries and territories. That is the organization’s reported reach, not an independently audited audience measurement.

Who won the major awards?

Lainey Wilson was the night’s defining winner, taking Entertainer of the Year and Female Artist of the Year. Jordan Davis won Song of the Year for “Next Thing You Know,” while Jelly Roll and Wilson shared Music Event of the Year for “Save Me.”

Those headline results give the show its “mostly predictable” feel: the biggest attention stayed with familiar, central figures rather than a dramatic upset. The available event reports establish who won, but not what the pre-show favorites or audience expectations were, so predictability here is a critical impression rather than a claim about betting odds or consensus.

Which performances stood out?

Lainey Wilson opened the show

Wilson began with “God Blessed Texas” and “Hang Tight Honey,” making her presence felt before her double win later in the ceremony. The opening also set a straightforward tone: a big country performance, followed by an evening built around more live sets than extended awards-show spectacle.

Kelsea Ballerini and Noah Kahan made the clearest crossover pairing

Kelsea Ballerini performed “Mountain With a View” and later joined Noah Kahan for “Stick Season.” The collaboration was one of the night’s more distinctive changes of pace, widening the musical palette without turning the ceremony into a different kind of show.

Jason Aldean paid tribute to Toby Keith

Jason Aldean performed “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” in tribute to Toby Keith. It gave the broadcast a memorial note amid the celebratory sets and awards, grounding the concert format in country music’s shared history.

Did the ceremony feel fresh or familiar?

Its strongest quality was also its clearest limitation: the show prioritized performances. Eighteen sets from 19 artists gave viewers plenty of music, and pairings such as Ballerini with Kahan created moments of genuine contrast. Wilson’s opening and the Toby Keith tribute gave the night recognizable anchors.

But a busy lineup is not the same as a surprising awards narrative. The major wins went to Wilson, whose two top honors supplied a clean central storyline, alongside established category outcomes for Davis and the “Save Me” collaboration. Without evidence about the pre-show predictions, it would be too strong to call those results objectively inevitable. As a viewing experience, however, the ceremony felt more charming than suspenseful: an amiable concert with occasional variety, rather than a night defined by shocks.

Where did the 2024 ceremony stream?

At the time of the event, the Academy said the show streamed exclusively on Prime Video and on the Amazon Music channel on Twitch. That describes the original May 2024 distribution; it does not establish whether the full ceremony is available on either platform now.
