In 2021, the three Teej observances commonly discussed in India fell on August 11 (Hariyali Teej), August 25 (Kajari Teej) and September 9 (Hartalika Teej). Teej is not one festival with a single date or uniform set of customs: the name covers distinct observances whose calendar descriptions and practices vary by region.
When were the Teej festivals in 2021?
Contemporaneous 2021 reporting gives these Gregorian dates. The lunar tithi framing—and, where relevant, its local timing—should be read alongside the particular observance.
| Observance | 2021 date | Calendar framing and reported customs |
|---|---|---|
| Hariyali Teej | August 11 | Shukla Paksha Tritiya in Shravana; green clothing, singing and dancing are among the customs described. |
| Kajari Teej | August 25 | Associated with Krishna Paksha; North Indian calendars place it in Bhadrapada, while South Indian calendars place it in Shravana. Neem worship and Kajari songs are reported practices. |
| Hartalika Teej | September 9 | Shukla Paksha Tritiya in Bhadrapada; reported observances include fasting and worship of Parvati and Shiva. |
These dates and calendar distinctions are reported by India Today’s 2021 overview. Drik Panchang’s 2021 Hariyali Teej calendar also lists August 11; its tithi boundaries are for a selected location, not universal timings. For a local puja time, consult a panchang set for the relevant place and calendar convention.
Why is Teej associated with the monsoon?
The Ministry of Tourism’s Utsav portal presents Teej as a group of seasonal celebrations, observed particularly in western and northern India, connected with the arrival of monsoon greenery, social gatherings, rituals and devotional customs. The season is part of the festival’s setting: celebrations can include singing, dancing, henna, bright lehariya saris, festive foods and swings.

These descriptions do not mean every community celebrates in the same way. The Hariyali Teej government page also places the observance in the green monsoon season and notes that cultural fairs and processions take place in some places. The Ministry’s account of a Goddess Teej procession is specifically an example from Jaipur, not a universal practice. See the Ministry of Tourism’s Teej Festival overview and its Hariyali Teej page.
How do the three observances differ?
Hariyali Teej
Hariyali, or “green,” Teej falls during the monsoon season. India Today associates its 2021 observance with Shukla Paksha Tritiya in Shravana and describes green dress, singing and dancing. Drik Panchang lists the same date, August 11, 2021. The exact tithi timing depends on location.

Kajari Teej
Kajari Teej, also called Badi Teej in the 2021 overview, fell on August 25. Its lunar-month label varies with calendar convention: the cited report places it in Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada in North Indian calendars and Krishna Paksha of Shravana in South Indian calendars. Neem puja and Kajari songs are among the practices reported; the calendar difference is a reason not to treat one label as universal.
Hartalika Teej
Hartalika Teej fell on September 9, 2021, on Shukla Paksha Tritiya of Bhadrapada according to the contemporaneous report. That account describes worship of Parvati and Shiva and fasting traditions. Fasting is not a practice to attribute to every woman or every Teej celebration; customs depend on the observance and community.

What customs are described for Hartalika Teej?
A September 2021 report describes women dressing for the occasion, applying mehndi, preparing special food and offering prayers to Parvati and Shiva. It lists puja materials including a plate, wooden chowki, cloth, clay or sand for making idols, coconut, kalash, leaves, ghee, lamp, incense, cotton wicks and camphor. This is one report’s list, not a required or exhaustive checklist for all families.
Mehndi is one cultural detail rather than a requirement. Anyone who wants to apply it may choose henna mehndi cones, but neither a particular product nor a purchase is necessary to understand or observe the festival. The ritual account is in India Today’s Hartalika Teej 2021 report.
