How The People V. Gorilla Grodd Connects to Superman Without David Corenswet

The announced DCU series The People V. Gorilla Grodd follows Jimmy Olsen’s in-universe true-crime investigation, connecting to Superman through the Daily Planet rather than a confirmed David Corenswet appearance.

The Daily Planet project is The People V. Gorilla Grodd, an eight-episode HBO Max comedy built as an in-universe true-crime documentary. It connects to Superman through Jimmy Olsen, Perry White, other Planet staff and Metropolis—not through a confirmed David Corenswet appearance. TVLine’s August 21, 2026 report named the returning cast but did not include Corenswet; that is an announced-cast omission, not proof he can never make a cameo.

What is the Daily Planet project?

The series is titled The People V. Gorilla Grodd, rather than simply “Daily Planet.” TVLine reported on August 21, 2026, that HBO Max ordered it straight to series for eight episodes. The announcement describes a comedy framed as an in-universe true-crime docuseries about a famous Metropolis murder trial.

In the story, Jimmy Olsen reopens the case of Gorilla Grodd, a superintelligent ape convicted of murdering his father, the King of Gorilla City. The format makes Jimmy’s investigation—not Superman’s exploits—the center of the series.

How does it connect to Superman?

The link is the world around Superman: the Daily Planet newsroom, its people and Metropolis. DC’s official page for Superman (2025) identifies David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent and lists Skyler Gisondo and Wendell Pierce among the cast. DC also describes journalism at the Planet as a significant part of the film, with Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen pursuing stories under editor Perry White.

TVLine’s announced series cast includes Gisondo returning as Jimmy, Pierce as Perry White, and Beck Bennett and Mikaela Hoover as other returning Daily Planet staff. That ensemble gives the series a direct newsroom connection to the film while letting it explore a different corner of the shared setting: how Metropolis covers and investigates a criminal case.

The approach fits a broader idea about the Planet’s role in the film. In a DC feature published July 18, 2025, James Gunn said, “Journalism is important to me.” Rachel Brosnahan said she wanted to focus on Lois “as a journalist as well as a counterpart for Superman and their love story.” The series announcement’s emphasis on Jimmy spotlighting the Metropolis criminal justice system extends that newsroom perspective, though its final episodes will determine how it plays out onscreen.

Does David Corenswet appear in the series?

Corenswet is not listed in TVLine’s August 21, 2026 announced cast for The People V. Gorilla Grodd. The report does not say that he will appear, but it also does not establish that a future cameo is impossible. The most accurate description is that the series is connected to the 2025 film’s world and Planet characters without Corenswet being part of the announced cast.

Nor does the announced cast establish exactly how much screen time any returning character will receive. Jimmy is the premise’s central reporter; the report names other returning staff, but it does not lay out their episode-by-episode roles.

These are different storytelling formats and points of view, not competing versions of the same release. The available announcement does not establish the series’ eventual character appearances beyond its named cast and premise.

Who is making it, and when will it premiere?

TVLine names Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault as showrunners and executive producers, with Yacenda directing all eight episodes. Yacenda described the series as something that would feel “less like an entry into the DCU and more like an artifact from it — a Daily Planet original documentary made for the people of Metropolis.”

In the same report, DC Studios co-chairmen and co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran said the docuseries would take viewers into “the darker and funnier streets and alleyways of the DCU” as Jimmy spotlighted the Metropolis criminal justice system. TVLine said the premiere date was not yet known on August 21, 2026. That is the status reported on that date; no current release date is established here.

Where to read more about the Daily Planet

For a comic-book look at the newsroom, DC’s Superman: The Daily Planet is a 192-page collection of classic stories featuring Clark Kent and Lois Lane as reporters, Jimmy Olsen as photographer, and Perry White as editor-in-chief. DC lists its on-sale date as March 8, 2006, so it is background reading rather than a tie-in to the announced series.
