The Trust said it had been alerted to social media posts it considered antisemitic, had not known about them when it appointed him, and had not carried out sufficiently thorough due diligence. Kapadia apologized for the hurt and offence caused, while saying the reposts did not reflect his intentions.
How the appointment was reversed
On 9 October 2024, the Grierson Trust announced Dorothy Byrne, Asif Kapadia and Louis Theroux as new patrons. It said patrons contribute their knowledge, influence and contacts to support the charity’s work and the documentary filmmaking community. The Trust’s announcement
On 11 October, the Trust said it had been alerted to social media posts shared by Kapadia that it considered antisemitic. It reported that its board met at 8am and decided to rescind his patron role. The Trust said it had not known about the posts when it made the appointment and acknowledged that its due diligence had not been thorough enough. The Trust’s statement
What the Trust said about its decision
The Trust framed the decision as part of its position on racism and inclusion. It said freedom of expression did not justify racist statements or behaviour and described its approach to racism as zero-tolerance. It also said it was committed to both freedom of speech and diversity and inclusion in the documentary industry. These are the Trust’s stated rationale and characterization; they are not an independent adjudication of every post.

The Trust acknowledged that some of the posts appeared to be no longer available and apologized for inadequate due diligence. The Grierson Trust’s 11 October statement
Examples of posts reported at the time
Jewish News reported examples that included a cartoon depicting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at a blood-stained table amid the rubble of Gaza, captioned “kosher,” and an image from Schindler’s List accompanied by a caption comparing events to Nazis. Jewish News’ report
Those examples were reported by the outlet, and the Trust said some posts appeared to have become unavailable. The available account does not provide a complete archive of the posts, so the examples should not be treated as a complete record.
Kapadia’s response and apology
Kapadia said he was “mortified by the hurt and offence” caused by some of his retweets. He acknowledged that some reposts would be seen by many as antisemitic or as justifying violence, while saying that was not his intention. He also said he felt passionately about Palestinians and Lebanese people and condemned antisemitism. The Independent’s report of his apology
Rank #3
He apologized for what he called ill-judged reposts made in haste and without due consideration. His apology addressed the hurt caused and his intent; it did not alter the Trust’s stated reason for rescinding the appointment.

The documented sequence is the 9 October appointment announcement, the Trust’s 11 October decision after posts were brought to its attention, the Trust’s explanation, and Kapadia’s apology. The sources establish what the Trust said about its decision and what Kapadia said in response; they do not settle every reader’s interpretation of the disputed posts. The available reporting establishes the 2024 event, not whether the status of the posts or Kapadia’s patronage changed later.
