Gigachad is internet slang for an exaggerated, idealized “Chad”: a conventionally attractive, confident, hyper-masculine man. It is also the name of a meme built around stylized black-and-white images associated with photographer Krista Sudmalis’s Sleek’N’Tears project and the berlin.1969 / Ernest Khalimov persona. The term was documented in 2017; a major wave of attention followed the “Average Fan vs. Average Enjoyer” format in 2021.
What does “Gigachad” mean?
“Chad” is an internet archetype for a confident, attractive man. “Gigachad” intensifies that idea into an almost impossibly assured ideal. In use, the word can be sincere praise or ironic exaggeration: someone who stays calm, acts decisively, or seems unbothered may be called a Gigachad.
In a comparison meme, the Gigachad often stands for the “enjoyer”—the composed, self-assured person set against a frantic or overinvested “fan.” The joke works even when the subject has nothing to do with appearance or masculinity: the image supplies a recognizable attitude that can be applied to a new topic.
For example: “He walked into the meeting, fixed the problem, and left like a Gigachad.”

- THE CULTURE MAP
What does the Gigachad meme depict?
The familiar black-and-white images are associated with Sleek’N’Tears, an art project by Russian photographer Krista Sudmalis, and with the berlin.1969 account and Ernest Khalimov persona. They are stylized or edited images; the available accounts do not establish every detail of their creation or the complete relationship between the persona, model, and project. It is more accurate to describe them as images associated with the project than as straightforward, unaltered portraits. Know Your Meme reported in April 2021 that the account writing as Khalimov said he liked the memes. Know Your Meme’s GigaChad entry recounts the image and meme history.
Where did the term come from?
Know Your Meme traces an early link to the @sleekntears Instagram page in a Reddit post on October 15, 2017. The next day, an anonymous 4chan /pol/ post applied the name “Gigachad” to an image; the term also appeared on Lookism Forums around that time. These are early documented appearances, not proof that no earlier private or unarchived use existed. Know Your Meme documents the chronology, while Wiktionary’s entry includes a corroborating archived 2017 example.
How did Gigachad go viral?
From image-project references to meme macros
After its early imageboard and forum circulation in 2017, Gigachad appeared in Reddit image macros. The striking image and exaggerated ideal made it easy to turn the figure into a reaction: a visual shorthand for confidence, composure, or a supposedly superior way of doing something.
The 2021 “Average Fan vs. Average Enjoyer” wave
The meme reached a broader audience through the “Average Fan vs. Average Enjoyer” video format in 2021. These comparisons typically set an excitable or obsessive fan against a calm Gigachad enjoyer. Some prominent examples used a slideshow of Gigachad images with Bring Me the Horizon’s “Can You Feel My Heart.” Once viewers recognized the contrast, the structure could be adapted to arguments, habits, tastes, and everyday situations beyond the original images.

Not in every community. A 2023 study of Polish youth speech describes “Gigachad” as a remarkable or ideal person regardless of gender, while also explaining the English and manosphere sense as a superior version of “Chad.” That finding is specific to the Polish-language context studied; it does not establish a universal change in English usage.
