The figures refer to different measures, though: Civil War earned $2.9 million in Thursday previews and a reported $25.7 million over its opening weekend.
Which A24 records did Civil War set?
Alex Garland’s 2024 film set two A24 benchmarks that should not be confused. Its $2.9 million Thursday-preview gross was a record for an A24 title at the time, according to a 2024 ComicBook.com report summarizing Deadline. That surpassed the previous A24 preview mark of $1.3 million, attributed to Hereditary in the same report. ComicBook.com’s preview report
The film then opened to $25.7 million in North America. TheWrap reported that total across 3,838 locations and said it set A24’s opening-weekend record, passing Hereditary’s $13.5 million opening in 2018. The Associated Press also reported a $25.7 million North American weekend estimate in 2024. TheWrap’s 2024 opening-weekend report · The Associated Press’s 2024 report
Does Civil War still hold A24’s opening-weekend record?
No. In 2026, the Associated Press reported that Backrooms took over A24’s opening-weekend record. AP used $25.5 million as its comparison figure for Civil War, rather than the $25.7 million reported contemporaneously by AP and TheWrap in 2024. These are source-specific reported totals; the available figures do not establish why the later comparison is lower, so they should not be silently treated as identical. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The record that changed hands is the opening-weekend record. The 2026 AP report does not say that Backrooms also surpassed Civil War’s Thursday-preview mark, so the $2.9 million preview achievement remains a distinct 2024 A24 record in the reporting cited here.
Why the preview and weekend numbers are different
Thursday previews measure ticket sales for advance evening screenings before a film’s main Friday opening day. They are not the full Friday–Sunday weekend total. Contemporary reporting said the Thursday preview receipts were included in Civil War’s opening-day figure, so adding $2.9 million to its weekend total would double-count those sales. The preview record compares one release window with another; the opening-weekend record compares a broader window.

Geography matters too: the $25.7 million figures describe North American receipts, not a worldwide total. TheWrap also reported that IMAX screens accounted for 48% of the opening gross, offering context on the film’s release footprint—not a separate record. TheWrap’s opening-weekend analysis
What the opening says—and does not say—about the film
The Associated Press reported that Civil War opened at number one in North America, ending Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’s two-week run at the top. AP box-office analyst Paul Dergarabedian said, “The title alone is enough to spark a conversation in a year where the political discourse is top of mind.” He also cautioned, “This isn’t destined to be a $200 million global blockbuster. But it’s a very high-profile win for A24.” AP’s opening-weekend story

TheWrap reported a production budget of $50 million, but a budget estimate and an opening-weekend gross are different measures. The $25.7 million opening alone does not establish whether the film was profitable; that would require broader revenue and cost information. TheWrap also reported a B− CinemaScore and 53% “definite recommend” in PostTrak. Those are historical audience measures from opening weekend, not current ratings. TheWrap’s report
