TODAY quotes a stylist’s definition of petite as 5 feet 3 inches or under. That is the expert’s framing, not a universal sizing standard. Town & Country reported in February 2026 that Abercrombie & Fitch offered short inseams of 26.5–28.5 inches, plus extra-short options for shoppers below five feet. Those figures describe the publication’s product reporting, not every style the retailer sells; confirm the measurement for the specific pair.
What inseam should I look for?
Measure a pair of pants that already gives you the hem position you like, or measure from the crotch seam down the inside leg to your preferred endpoint. Then compare that measurement with the jeans’ listed inseam. An ankle-length finish, a cropped look and a full-length hem call for different endpoints, and the same inseam can sit differently depending on the rise and cut.

Use your height as a starting point, not a substitute for measuring. Good Housekeeping’s guide, updated January 9, 2024, describes testing with people 5 feet to 5 feet 4 inches tall and inseams of 23 to 28 inches. That is the guide’s testing sample—not a rule for all petite shoppers or a promise that its picks will fit everyone.
How to compare jeans before you buy
- Inseam and hem: Match the listed measurement to where you want the jeans to end, allowing for the style’s intended crop or full length.
- Rise: Compare the rise with your torso and leg proportions; a high rise can feel different from a lower rise even when inseams match.
- Cut: Decide whether you want a straight, vintage-inspired or more fitted leg, and consider how much structure or volume suits your preferred look.
- Size and variant: Check whether the exact wash and size are offered in petite, short or extra-short lengths. Do not assume every wash has identical options.
- Fabric and fit notes: Read the listing for stretch and fit details when provided; the same size label does not tell you how a particular denim fabric will feel.
Good Housekeeping reports that its testers ranged from sizes 25 to 33 (or 0 to 16), heights 5 feet to 5 feet 4 inches, and inseams 23 to 28 inches. Its guide also notes that fit can differ by wash and style. Those ranges describe its sample only; they do not establish universal sizing.

What if the right pair is still too long?
First check whether the retailer offers the same style in a shorter inseam; Town & Country’s reporting on Abercrombie & Fitch short and extra-short choices is one example of a brand offering multiple lengths. If the pair fits well elsewhere but the hem is too long, hemming is another practical option. Decide based on the intended hem, fabric and details at the ankle, since altering a pair can change how its original finish looks.
