Jerry O’Donnell, the actor known for roles in Bosch and other television dramas, was 65 when he was reported training with the Asheville Police Department in October 2025. He was taking Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET)—not yet a certified officer—and the milestones then projected for him were conditional, not confirmation that he completed the process.
Who is the actor training to become a police officer?
O’Donnell’s television credits include Bosch, Dexter, Mad Men, SEAL Team, Without a Trace, N.Y.P.D. Blue and JAG, according to the October 2025 profile by Asheville Watchdog, republished by Police1. A later TV Insider report also identified him as a Bosch actor and listed Mad Men and The Young and the Restless among his credits.
The “Rookie” description refers to a new police recruit. The available reporting does not connect O’Donnell to the television series The Rookie.
Was Jerry O’Donnell already an Asheville police officer?
No—not in the status described by the October 2025 report. O’Donnell and his fellow cadets were about halfway through BLET at that point. The report said they expected a state test in mid-January 2026, with graduation projected for January 30 if candidates passed. Swearing-in was anticipated in March, followed by additional post-BLET and field training. The overall process was estimated at about a year.

Those were plans reported in October 2025, not evidence that O’Donnell passed the test, graduated, was sworn in or completed field training. A February 22, 2026 report said APD swore in a new BLET graduating class at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College and that a retired actor was among the class. The accessible report excerpt does not name that actor, so it does not establish O’Donnell’s individual status.
Does Asheville have an age limit for police recruits?
In the 2025 profile, APD spokesperson Rick Rice said the department had no upper age limit for new officers and a minimum age of 20. He described O’Donnell as “certainly the oldest in the last 20-30 years” and said he was “probably the oldest ever,” while noting that department records could not confirm the all-time claim.

The City of Asheville’s police recruitment page, reviewed September 14, 2026, says applicants must be at least 20 by the time they finish the academy and must be able to perform all essential duties. The page does not state an upper age limit. Age eligibility is only one part of qualification; candidates must also meet the department’s requirements and pass the relevant training and physical tests.
Rice gave one comparison in the 2025 report: the 36 cadets in APD’s two most recent BLET classes had an average age of 31.74. That figure describes those classes as reported at the time, not a current academy average or a measure of how older recruits generally fare.

What did O’Donnell’s police training involve?
Academy and certification
The City of Asheville currently lists a 20-to-22-week in-house academy with 39 required subjects. Its recruitment page says trainees must pass a physical test at the end of BLET to become certified. BLET graduation and certification are distinct from the additional department training that follows; the 2025 account described post-BLET and field training as later steps.
Physical training in O’Donnell’s account
O’Donnell described cadet physical training as runs up and down a parking garage interspersed with exercises. He said, “When we do PT, we go on these runs in the parking garage — you run up, run down, run the parking garage. And then you do exercises — 15 air squats, run up another level. Do 50 push ups, run up another level. Do 50 burpees.” He also said he had worked out for an hour a day, six days a week before the academy and limited running to protect his knees. These are details from his experience, not a general preparation plan.

Why did he make the career change?
O’Donnell and his wife, Alison Crowley, moved from Los Angeles to Asheville. The profile reported that he had served four years in the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division and had played law-enforcement characters in television productions. His acting experience did not exempt him from police training or establish that he was qualified for the job; he suggested that acting’s emphasis on empathy might translate, and praised APD’s focus on empathy and de-escalation.
Crowley said the community’s response after Hurricane Helene helped motivate his interest in serving Asheville. O’Donnell described service as a source of purpose: “I feel blessed and grateful to still have some ability, so you know, that’s like a sense of purpose — to be of service.”
