Exactly 5,838 people danced the Nutbush at the Big Red Bash near Birdsville in outback Queensland in July 2023. The often-rounded headline figure of 6,000 was not the verified count: participants had to complete the five-minute dance to be included. The event was planned as a tribute to Tina Turner, who died in May 2023.
How many people danced the Nutbush at the Big Red Bash?
The recorded total was 5,838 dancers. ABC News reported that the Queensland attempt was carefully observed and that people who did not complete the dance were not counted. It was therefore a verified participant count, not simply an estimate of how many people gathered at the festival. ABC News reported on the attempt and its five-minute participation rule.

The Big Red Bash had built toward the milestone across earlier attempts. PerthNow reported totals of 1,719 in 2018, 2,330 in 2019 and 4,087 in 2022, before the festival reached 5,838 in July 2023. PerthNow’s report gives the previous Big Red Bash totals.
Where and when was the Queensland record attempt?
The dance took place at the Big Red Bash, a music festival near Birdsville in outback Queensland, in July 2023. Its remote Queensland setting matters: this was a Big Red Bash event, not the later Mundi Mundi Bash attempt in New South Wales.

Why was the Nutbush dance a Tina Turner tribute?
Turner died in May 2023. In a preview published on 26 May, Big Red Bash founder Greg Donovan described the planned record attempt as the festival’s main tribute to her. ABC News quoted him: “It’s early days, and we’ll work on something to really put up a great tribute to Tina Turner, but I think the main tribute is trying to get 5,000-plus people this year to break the record again.” ABC News covered the planned tribute before the festival.

Yes. In August 2023, weeks after the Big Red Bash, 6,594 people danced at the Mundi Mundi Bash in New South Wales, surpassing the Queensland total. The Royal Flying Doctor Service reported that registrations for the Mundi Mundi dance cost $15 each and raised more than $100,000 for the service. That fundraising figure belongs to the New South Wales event, not the Big Red Bash in Queensland. The Royal Flying Doctor Service reported the Mundi Mundi count and fundraising.

| Big Red Bash | Near Birdsville, Queensland | July 2023 | 5,838 |
| Mundi Mundi Bash | New South Wales | August 2023 | 6,594 |
These figures describe the two reported 2023 attempts. The available reporting establishes that the Mundi Mundi total overtook the Big Red Bash figure; it does not establish 5,838 as the current record-holder total. The later New South Wales event’s record history also changed: its organizers say the Nutbush attempt was retired after 2025, and Destination NSW reported in June 2026 that the 2026 Mundi Mundi event replaced it with a Bash Choir. Mundi Mundi Bash’s event history and Destination NSW’s 2026 announcement concern the New South Wales festival, not the Queensland attempt.
