Hulk Hogan’s legacy holds two truths at once: his larger-than-life wrestling character helped make him a star, while his recorded racist remarks and later public choices left some fans angry or distrustful. The five reasons on each side below organize documented reactions; they are not a ranking or a measure of what all fans think.
Why do fans love Hulk Hogan?
1. His hero character was easy to recognize
Hogan’s red-and-yellow gear, muscular image, patriotic presentation, gestures and catchphrases made him an immediately legible hero, especially for children and family audiences. Wrestling writer Kazeem Famuyide recalled that childhood appeal to the Associated Press: “He was a superhero to a lot of people, including myself.” He also remembered Hogan’s message to “train, say your prayers and eat your vitamins.” Associated Press
2. He knew how to connect with a crowd
Hogan combined imposing size with a showman’s timing. WWE’s account of his career highlights his charisma, while ABC’s retrospective notes his early interest in the interaction between performer and audience. 3. He became a central figure in wrestling’s mainstream rise
WWE credits Hogan as a central figure in its growth from a regional attraction into a worldwide entertainment company. Its 2025 obituary says 93,173 people attended WrestleMania III at the Pontiac Silverdome and records six WWE Championship wins for Hogan. 4. His biggest matches became lasting memories
For many viewers, Hogan’s WrestleMania III showdown with André the Giant and his WrestleMania X8 match with The Rock stand out as defining moments. The appeal was not only the wrestling itself: these matches brought together major personalities, a charged crowd and the feeling that a familiar figure was part of a historic event. 5. Hollywood Hogan gave him a dramatic second act
In 1996, Hogan traded his traditional hero image for the darker “Hollywood Hogan” persona and became a leading figure in the New World Order (nWo), a faction that helped define WCW’s rivalry with WWF. The reinvention showed that his appeal was not limited to playing an all-American hero. Why do some fans dislike or distrust Hulk Hogan?
1. Racist remarks on a recording damaged his reputation
Transcripts of a recording published in 2015 included Hogan using racist slurs and expressing racist views. Hogan apologized and called the language unacceptable, according to the Associated Press. On August 5, 2015, WWE announced that it had terminated its contract with him, saying: “WWE is committed to embracing and celebrating individuals from all backgrounds as demonstrated by the diversity of our employees, performers and fans worldwide.” Associated Press WWE
2. Some people did not find the apology convincing
An apology does not necessarily repair trust, particularly for people who had admired the person who caused harm. Famuyide told the Associated Press: “You never really got the feeling that Hulk Hogan truly felt remorse.” That is Famuyide’s assessment, not a fact about Hogan’s private feelings. AP also reported that the episode reopened painful contradictions for some Black fans who had admired Hogan in the ring. Associated Press

3. The recording and its exposure became part of a wider controversy
Coverage also described homophobic language in the recording and separate racist comments on a recorded call with Hogan’s son. Hogan’s privacy lawsuit against Gawker and its settlement became part of the public history around the recording. Those are related but distinct issues: the dispute over how private material was published does not erase the content of the remarks, and criticism of the remarks does not settle the separate privacy debate. 4. His political alignment alienated some viewers
Hogan endorsed Donald Trump and appeared at the 2024 Republican National Convention. For some audience members, that public alignment added to doubts about the sincerity of his apology. The Associated Press quoted commentator Bomani Jones discussing that connection; it is a reported interpretation of some people’s response, not evidence of a universal political consensus among wrestling fans. 5. The 2025 Raw boos made the divide visible
Hogan was booed at the January 2025 Raw on Netflix premiere in Los Angeles. The reaction showed how the audience at that event responded; it does not establish how all fans felt. In a May interview reported by Sports Illustrated, Hogan said, “For some reason, I’ve laid some type of groundwork that people are still interested in what I’m doing.” He also said there was “a whole different reaction, media-wise” when he was booed. Hogan’s wrestling appeal and the reasons people criticize him concern different parts of his public life. His hero persona, crowd work, headline matches and reinvention as Hollywood Hogan explain why he mattered to viewers and to wrestling’s mainstream growth. The racist remarks, questions about his apology and later political choices shape how some people assess his character and accountability.

That contrast can be especially difficult for fans whose childhood memories of Hogan coexist with knowledge of the recording. His history is not reduced to one response: someone can recognize his influence as a performer and still condemn what he said, while another viewer may find the off-ring record too consequential to separate from the entertainment.
What happened to Hogan’s WWE status?
WWE announced that it had terminated its contract with Hogan in 2015 after the racist remarks became public. ABC reports that he was reinstated into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2018. Those institutional decisions are part of the record, but neither one establishes a single, settled view among fans. WWE ABC News
What is the fairest way to understand the split?
Hogan’s legacy is divided because his in-ring character and his off-ring record invite different judgments. The hero who sold spectacle to huge crowds, the Hollywood Hogan who reinvented himself, and the person whose recorded language prompted lasting criticism are all part of the same public history.
