If you want to read or publish fanfiction outside Archive of Our Own (AO3), the best fit depends on your fandom and what you need from a platform. FanFiction.Net, Royal Road, and Scribble Hub have official policy information supporting a useful comparison; Wattpad is a possible option, but its current fanfiction rules and features are not verified here. A fifth service cannot be responsibly recommended from the available evidence, so this guide gives you three substantiated choices and a fourth to investigate cautiously rather than padding the list with an unsupported fifth.
How to choose a fanfiction site
Before creating an account or moving a story, check whether your fandom has recent activity on the site and whether its search and tagging tools make the stories you want easy to find. For writers, also check rating and warning requirements, feedback and publishing options, and whether the platform permits the commercial links or promotion you plan to use. There are no comparable readership figures here to support ranking these services by audience size.
AO3 describes itself as a home for transformative, non-commercial fanworks and bars commercial product promotion on the archive. That is useful context if you are seeking a different community or publishing environment, but it does not establish that another site is better. Read AO3’s Terms of Service FAQ before deciding what kind of difference matters to you.
Three alternatives with published policy information
FanFiction.Net
FanFiction.Net groups works across categories such as anime, books, cartoons, comics, games, movies, and television, making it a broad place to check for a familiar media-based fandom. Its terms restrict commercial use and the copying or exploitation of user submissions, and reserve the service’s ability to remove infringing submissions. These are the platform’s terms, not a legal ruling on fanfiction generally. Check FanFiction.Net’s guidelines and terms before posting.

Royal Road
Royal Road presents itself as a home for web novels and fanfiction. Its content guidelines require authors to identify fanfiction and credit the source where applicable. The policy says: “If your content is based on another author’s setting, characters, or terminology, it must be tagged as fanfiction with the appropriate credit added in the description, unless the following applies:” The guidelines also prohibit donation links and buying internal advertisements for fanfiction. They require warnings for applicable sexual content, disturbing content, profanity, or graphic violence. Review Royal Road’s Content Guidelines for the full rules and exceptions.
Scribble Hub
Scribble Hub’s published guidelines prohibit donation links on fanfiction and call for warnings on mature-audience stories, including those involving gore, sexual content, or strong language. Those policy points do not establish how large an audience a particular fandom has there or how easily stories are discovered. The current page could not be independently confirmed, so check the live guidelines before posting. Consult Scribble Hub’s guidelines.

Two more places to investigate—not verified recommendations
Wattpad
Wattpad is a potential place to investigate, but the current fanfiction rules, discovery features, readership, and monetization policies are not established by the available official-source evidence. Confirm those details directly with Wattpad before choosing it, especially if you plan to post mature material or promote paid work. Start with Wattpad’s Terms of Service.
A fifth site requires verification
No fifth distinct service has enough current, source-backed information here to recommend responsibly. Before treating any additional platform as a candidate, verify that it currently accepts fanfiction, review its official content and commercial-use policies, and look for recent activity in your fandom. A site name alone is not evidence that it is a practical alternative.
Rank #3
- Composition book contains 100 double-sided sheets; A classic favorite for journaling and lab notes
- Wide ruling gives you plenty of writing space for notetaking
- Sewn binding is smooth, helps keep pages securely in place and lays flat when open
- Inside covers feature a class schedule, multiplication tables, conversion tables and grammar rules
- Pages measure 7.5" x 9.75"; Black Marble Soft Cover
A practical way to compare your options
- Look for activity in your fandom. Search the site for the characters, pairing, or canon you read or write, then check whether recent works and discussion are appearing.
- Test discovery. Try the search, tags, ratings, and filters as a reader. Consider whether they help you find specific material and whether readers can locate your work.
- Read the rules that affect your story. Check fanfiction labeling, attribution, ratings, warnings, and any restrictions on mature content.
- Check commercial restrictions. If you use donation links, paid promotion, or product links, confirm the platform permits them for fanfiction. Royal Road and Scribble Hub publish restrictions on donation links; Royal Road also bars internal advertising purchases for fanfiction.
- Decide whether moving is worth it. A different platform may offer a community or publishing environment that suits you better, but you will need to assess its fandom activity and features directly rather than assume a larger audience.
Platform rules can change, so revisit the official policy pages immediately before publishing or moving a story.
