Paul McCartney’s documented and reported car history spans a record-player-equipped Aston Martin, a coachbuilt Mini Cooper S, an Italian Lamborghini and, later, a Lexus hybrid. These are historical ownership stories—not a verified account of his current garage—and the evidence varies: the DB5 has auction provenance, while some details come from interviews and magazine reporting.
What cars did Paul McCartney own?
Five compelling examples are his 1964 Aston Martin DB5, customized Mini Cooper S DeVille, Aston Martin DB6, Lamborghini Espada Series II and a Lexus hybrid. They make an unusually varied set: three grand touring or luxury cars, a tiny British icon transformed by a coachbuilder, and a later hybrid whose model has not been identified in the reporting.
The distinction between documented provenance and reported recollection matters. The DB5’s auction account gives the clearest ownership trail; McCartney recalled owning Aston Martins and an Espada in an interview with Octane. British GQ reports the Mini and Lexus stories.
1. 1964 Aston Martin DB5: a grand tourer with a record player
McCartney ordered a DB5 before the Beatles’ 1964 world tour. The auction account says the car was delivered to his accountants and registered in his name. It was originally Sierra Blue with a black interior and fitted with a Philips Auto-Mignon record player—an apt detail for a musician who wanted records on the road. The former McCartney car later sold at auction; it should not be confused with a car he is known to own today. The auction account documents these details.

Aston Martin’s 2023 retrospective names McCartney among the DB5’s celebrated 1960s patrons. The company says production included 887 saloons, 123 convertibles and 12 bespoke coach-built shooting brakes. Its standard DB5 engine was 3,995cc and produced 282 bhp. Those figures describe the model, not a unique specification of McCartney’s individual car. Aston Martin’s DB5 retrospective
2. 1965 Mini Cooper S DeVille: a small car made personal
McCartney’s Mini shows that his taste was not limited to expensive grand tourers. GQ reports that it was among the Beatles’ cars modified by Harold Radford & Co. Its California sage-green paint, Webasto sliding sunroof, extra front fog lamps, Aston Martin taillights and woodgrain interior turned the compact Mini into a distinctly customized car.

The Mini also appeared in Magical Mystery Tour, linking it to the Beatles’ public history as well as McCartney’s motoring choices. GQ reported that it sold at auction in 2018 for £182,000, describing the result at the time as a record for a Mini. That is a historical sale figure, not a current valuation. British GQ’s account
3. 1966 Aston Martin DB6: a bigger touring car with a tape recorder
The DB6 carried the Aston Martin grand-touring idea into a larger car than the DB5. GQ describes a longer-wheelbase design and a Kammback rear, and reports that McCartney specified a reel-to-reel tape recorder. That feature makes the car especially memorable in the context of a songwriter’s life, though the equipment detail is magazine reporting rather than a surviving specification cited here.

McCartney himself recalled the Aston Martins in an interview with Octane: “I’d originally had Aston Martins, a DB5 and 6, and I loved them.” Octane’s interview supports the ownership recollection; GQ supplies the reported details of the DB6.
4. Lamborghini Espada Series II: a definite Italian chapter
Octane reports that McCartney bought a new Series II Espada in March 1972. Its account draws on Del Hopkins, a Lamborghini Concessionaires employee who carried out the car’s pre-delivery inspection and kept an index card naming McCartney as buyer. McCartney also recalled the Espada in the Octane interview, saying, “Definitely the Espada, maybe the 400.”

- THE PERFECT PRESENT: Don't know what to get dad for his birthday? Or maybe you have an avid hobbyist or collector in your life. This model kit makes an ideal gift for any occasion!
That qualification helps separate the Espada from a less certain Lamborghini story. A red 400GT seen near Savile Row has been associated with McCartney, but Octane says the specific car has not been conclusively proved to have been his. McCartney remembered the 400 only as a possibility. The Espada is the stronger choice for a five-car list.
A widely repeated story says Linda McCartney left the Espada’s brake off and the car rolled into a pond. McCartney told Octane he did not remember that account, so it should not be presented as established fact. Octane’s feature

5. Lexus hybrid: a later, model-unspecified gift
GQ reports that Lexus, a sponsor of McCartney’s 2005 US tour, sent him a luxury hybrid around his 65th birthday. The article says he was pleased with the car but objected to it having been flown from Japan, which he considered environmentally harmful. The model is not named in the reporting, so identifying it more precisely would be guesswork. British GQ’s account
What the five cars reveal—and what they do not
Together, the cars suggest a taste for distinctive design and purposeful details rather than one fixed category. The DB5’s record player and the DB6’s reported tape recorder connect motoring with music; the Radford Mini emphasizes playful customization; the Espada adds Italian luxury; and the Lexus story reflects a later interest in hybrid technology and its environmental trade-offs.
The record is not a verified inventory of McCartney’s cars today. The strongest evidence here is the DB5’s auction documentation, while the Aston Martin and Espada ownership recollections come from Octane and the Mini and Lexus accounts come from GQ. Claims about other vehicles should be treated with the same care: GQ labels the story linking McCartney to an Austin-Healey as an urban myth.
