The 41 names below come from different cultural and literary traditions, not a shared canon or an objective ranking. The available source material supports detailed discussion of four examples; the remaining names are presented as a roster, not as verified claims about their powers.
How to read a list of mythic objects
A weapon, a vessel, a ring, and a piece of protective gear do not do the same work in a story. An object may matter because it establishes who may rule, transfers danger, protects its bearer, or expresses a relationship between a hero, a deity, and a community. Its importance is not measured by how much damage it can cause.
Versions matter, too. A familiar name can gather together details from separate retellings, while an object’s religious or cultural meaning may not be interchangeable across traditions. The entries below therefore distinguish between the four cases for which a specific account is established here and the broader candidate roster.
Four objects with source-specific accounts
Excalibur
Excalibur is Arthur’s legendary sword, but medieval retellings do not treat every Arthurian sword as the same object. In some accounts, the sword that demonstrates Arthur’s right to rule is distinct from the blade later called Excalibur. The Sword in the Stone and Excalibur should therefore not be treated as synonyms unless a particular version explicitly joins them. In Malory, the scabbard also matters: it receives its own attention rather than serving as a forgettable accessory. Excalibur’s significance can be martial and political, but the details depend on the retelling.

Mjölnir
Mjölnir is Thor’s hammer in Norse myth. In the account considered here, it serves both as a weapon and as a focus for divine acts. Details familiar from modern adaptations should not automatically be attributed to Norse sources: for example, a particular account of how the hammer returns to its bearer needs support from the specific Eddic passage or retelling being discussed.
Pandora’s jar
The Hesiodic account describes a jar, the Greek pithos, given to Pandora. When it is opened, evils escape; Hope remains. “Pandora’s box” is the familiar expression, but “jar” better describes the vessel in this account. Another later version has the jar contain blessings that are lost. The accounts do not agree on what remained inside, so no single ending should be presented as universal.

The vajra
A broad reference account identifies the vajra as Indra’s weapon in Vedic tradition and notes that the object also has symbolic uses in Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain contexts. That compressed summary does not make those religious meanings identical. A careful account must name the tradition and source it is describing rather than treating “the vajra” as one unchanging symbol.
The 41-name roster
The following names are a cross-cultural candidate list, not 37 additional source-verified descriptions of an object’s powers. A name alone does not establish a particular story, version, function, limitation, or religious meaning; those details need a tradition-specific text or other reliable source before being stated as fact.

Why the same object can mean more than one kind of power
These names span weapons and objects whose narrative or symbolic importance may be very different. The four source-specific examples show why a simple ranking would mislead: Excalibur’s role can involve royal legitimacy as well as combat; Pandora’s vessel changes what reaches the human world; Mjölnir has a divine role as well as a martial one; and the vajra belongs to distinct religious contexts that should not be collapsed into one account.
For any individual object, the useful questions are: Which tradition and version is being described? Who bears, makes, or guards it? What does the source actually say it does? Does it have a cost or limitation? And does its significance lie in practical force, protection, authority, ritual, or symbolism? Without those answers, calling an object “the most powerful” says more about a modern ranking than about the story.
