This one ranks 30 memorable film heroes by courage under pressure, the people they protect, moral conviction, sacrifice, resilience, character growth, and their impact on their stories—not combat skill alone. It includes superheroes, lawmen, investigators, adventurers, and ordinary people facing extraordinary choices.
One published list, Yahoo’s 2024 republication of Business Insider’s ranking, includes 51 heroes and puts Superman first; FamilyMinded ranks 40 and says its choices reflect courage and staying true to oneself. Those are distinct editorial judgments, not a shared consensus. The countdown below is an independent selection, not a definitive canon.
How this ranking measures movie heroism
A hero can prevail through force, but also through persistence, protecting someone vulnerable, or choosing a difficult moral course. The entries below are ranked by how strongly their actions embody those qualities, how much they risk, and how memorable their choices are within their films. Genre, era, and scale of challenge differ, so the order is an argument—not a claim that one kind of hero is inherently superior.

1. Ellen Ripley — Aliens (1986)
Ripley returns to the source of her trauma not for glory, but to protect a child and confront a threat to others. Her competence, hard-won courage, and willingness to put someone else’s safety ahead of her own make her the strongest all-around hero in this ranking.
Why published rankings disagree
Different lists reward different virtues and draw from different pools of films. Yahoo’s 2024 republication of Business Insider’s “The 51 greatest movie heroes of all time, ranked” describes a mix of antiheroes, superheroes, and real-life heroes. FamilyMinded’s 40-entry list says it is not exhaustive and argues that heroes can emerge in any circumstance or genre. Yahoo also published a separate ten-entry ranking that places Ellen Ripley first. These variations show that “best” depends on the criteria and selection, not on a settled vote or official canon.
For readers comparing lists, the useful questions are what obstacle a character faces, whom they protect, what they risk, which ethical choice defines them, and how they change. Those measures leave room for a marshal, an investigator, an adventurer, and a superhero without pretending their challenges are identical.
