New Year observances vary by calendar and community; a phrase suited to one celebration may not be the right greeting for another.
31 ways to say “Happy New Year”
Transliterations below follow the cited source rather than combining different spellings. They are pronunciation guides, not precise phonetic transcriptions. The first 22 entries are from Rosetta Stone’s 2024 guide; the additional phrases and alternatives are from Duolingo unless another source is noted.
- Arabic: سنة جديدة سعيدة — Sanat Jadidat Saeida (Rosetta Stone).
- Chinese (Mandarin): 新年快乐 — Xīnnián Kuàilè (Rosetta Stone). The Shanghai Municipal Government also gives this as “Happy Chinese New Year.”
- Dutch: Gelukkig Nieuwjaar.
- Farsi (Persian): سال نو مبارک — Sale no Mobarak.
- French: Bonne Année.
- German: Frohes Neues Jahr.
- Greek: Καλή χρονιά — Kalí Chroniá.
- Hebrew: שנה טובה — Shana Tova. Rosetta Stone identifies this as a customary Rosh Hashanah greeting, not specifically a January 1 greeting.
- Hindi: नए साल की शुभकामनाएँ — Nae saal kee shubhakaamanaen.
- Irish: Athbhliain faoi Mhaise Duit (to one person). Rosetta Stone gives Athbhliain faoi Mhaise Daoibh for a group.
- Italian: Buon Anno. Duolingo writes Buon anno! and glosses it as “Good year!”
- Japanese: あけましておめでとう — Akemashite Amedetō (Rosetta Stone). Duolingo gives 明けましておめでとう!
- Korean: 새해 복 많이 받으세요 — Sae Hae Bok Mani Ba Du Seo (Rosetta Stone). Duolingo glosses the phrase as “May you have good fortune this new year.”
- Latin: Felicem Annum Novum.
- Polish: Wszystkiego najlepszego w Nowym Roku.
- Portuguese: Feliz Ano Novo.
- Russian: С Новым Годом — S Novym Godom (Rosetta Stone).

- Turkish: Mutlu yıllar.
- Vietnamese: Chúc mừng năm mới.
- Swahili: Heri Njema za Mwaka Mpya! Duolingo glosses it as “Best wishes for the new year!”
- Gaelic: Bliadhna Mhath Ùr! This is Duolingo’s label; the source does not specify which Gaelic variety it means.
- Romanian: Un An Nou fericit! — “A happy new year!”
- Basque: Urte berri on! — “Good new year!”
- Maltese: Is-Sena t-Tajba! — “Good year!”
- Czech: Veselý Silvestr! Duolingo explains this as a “Happy Sylvester” greeting: December 31 is Saint Silvestr’s feast day.
- German (before New Year): Guten Rutsch (ins neue Jahr). Duolingo describes this as wishing someone a “good slide” into the new year in the days before January 1.
- Chinese (informal alternative): 新年好. Duolingo labels this an informal alternative to 新年快乐.
- Arabic (alternate expression): كل سنة وأنتم بخير. Duolingo glosses this as “Every year and you are well.”
Choose a greeting that fits the occasion
“Happy New Year” does not always mean January 1. Rosetta Stone describes observances including Nowruz around March 21, Hijri New Year in June or July, and Rosh Hashanah in September or October. Those are broad seasonal descriptions in its guide, not date calculations for a particular year. Check the calendar and context of the person you are greeting.
For Chinese Spring Festival
The Shanghai Municipal Government’s February 8, 2024 page lists 新年快乐 (xīn nián kuài lè) as “Happy Chinese New Year” and 春节快乐 (chūn jié kuài lè) as “Happy Spring Festival.” It also includes greetings specific to the 2024 Year of the Dragon; those year-specific wishes should not be reused for a different zodiac year.

The list draws on Rosetta Stone’s 2024 guide, “How To Say ‘Happy New Year’ in 22 Different Languages,” and Duolingo’s “Say ‘Happy New Year’ in Spanish, Chinese, and 18 Other Languages” (publication date not displayed on the opened page). Because the sources differ in transliteration and detail, each supplied spelling has been kept with its source rather than blended into a single pronunciation system. Some expressions are wishes for good fortune, a good year, or happiness rather than literal word-for-word translations.
