Scary-clown movies range from stories built around a killer clown to films where a sinister toy or an unforgettable clown character is only one part of the horror. This spoiler-light guide groups 25 picks by their kind of menace and tone, so you can choose a grim slasher, a supernatural threat, an offbeat comedy, or an older film for a marathon.
How to choose a scary-clown movie
Not every film here is a killer-clown story. Some put a clown at the center of the plot; others are clown-adjacent, with a memorable character, disguise, or frightening object. The list is a set of recommendations, not a ranking.
- For a grim modern slasher: try the Terrifier films.
- For supernatural menace: consider It, Clown, or Poltergeist.
- For camp and horror-comedy: Killer Klowns from Outer Space takes a deliberately playful science-fiction approach.
- For a historical starting point: the silent-era He Who Gets Slapped and The Man Who Laughs offer very different roots for unsettling clown imagery.
Classic and early clown films
1. He Who Gets Slapped (1924)
A humiliated scientist becomes a circus clown in this silent psychological drama. It is a historical starting point for the tormented-clown figure, rather than a conventional modern horror film. The BFI includes it in its survey of clown films: 10 great clown films.
2. The Man Who Laughs (1928)
This expressionist literary adaptation follows a disfigured travelling player whose fixed grin evokes clown imagery. Its disturbing face and atmosphere make it a natural companion to horror-clown stories, even though it is not a standard killer-clown film. The BFI discusses it alongside other notable clown films.
#1 Best Overall
3. Poltergeist (1982)
The clown is a frightening toy rather than the story’s main antagonist, making this a clown-adjacent choice. The film’s supernatural horror gives that image room to linger without turning the whole plot into a clown movie.
4. The House on Sorority Row (1982)
This slasher includes a clown-related reveal. It is better approached as a broader ensemble horror film than as a story driven throughout by a clown.
5. Xtro (1982)
A murderous clown toy appears within this wider science-fiction horror story. Pick it for strange, unsettling imagery rather than a focused clown-villain plot.
6. Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)
Extraterrestrial clowns menace a small town in a knowingly comic science-fiction horror premise. Its campy, playful tone is a sharp contrast to the more brutal entries on this list.
7. Clownhouse (1989)
Three brothers face escaped patients who have taken on clown identities. The threat is human rather than supernatural, and the disguise is central to the film’s unsettling setup.
Pennywise and supernatural clown stories
8. It (1990)
This television adaptation of Stephen King’s story features Pennywise, one of horror’s best-known clown figures. Choose it for an earlier screen version of the character.
9. It (2017)
The modern adaptation brings Pennywise back in a feature-film version of King’s novel. It is a strong pick if you want a contemporary supernatural clown antagonist; the film adapts King’s 1986 novel, as noted by Esquire’s guide to scary-clown movies.
10. It Chapter Two (2019)
The sequel returns to the Pennywise story. It belongs after the 2017 film for viewers following that modern adaptation.
11. Clown (2014)
A man becomes unable to remove a clown suit in this supernatural horror film. The premise makes the clown transformation itself the source of dread.
12. Fear of Clowns (2004)
This phobia-themed story follows a protagonist whose fears seem to come to life. It leans into the unsettling idea of clowns as a personal, psychological threat.

13. Krampus (2015)
A frightening jack-in-the-box creature gives this holiday horror film a clown-adjacent jolt. It is not a clown-centered movie, but it fits a marathon built around uncanny clown imagery.
Human killers and brutal clown antagonists
14. House of 1000 Corpses (2003)
Captain Spaulding is the memorable clown figure in this very gory horror film. Choose it for a grim, abrasive watch rather than a playful clown story.

This true-crime horror film is based on John Wayne Gacy, who worked as a party clown. Treat it as a dramatization, not a documentary or a substitute for the historical record.
16. The Devil’s Rejects (2005)
Captain Spaulding appears again, but the film is not driven by a clown-centered plot. It is an adjacent pick for viewers interested in the character after House of 1000 Corpses.
17. Terrifier (2016)
Art the Clown stalks women on Halloween in this grim slasher. Its bleak, graphic approach makes it one of the more intense choices here.
