Their careers then moved through very different roles and projects. That makes “the new Heath Ledger” an evocative comparison—not a factual claim that Gordon-Levitt replaced Ledger or has the same legacy.
1. They share a defining early-career film
10 Things I Hate About You is the clearest reason the actors invite comparison. Ledger played Patrick Verona; Gordon-Levitt played Cameron James. The film placed both young performers in a widely recognizable teen-comedy setting, though their characters and performances were distinct. The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) includes the movie in its account of Ledger’s career, while D23 lists Gordon-Levitt among the film’s cast and credits: NFSA’s Heath Ledger profile and D23’s Joseph Gordon-Levitt entry.

2. The 21 reasons, considered carefully
The title’s number is a framing device, not a sourced tally of 21 independent proofs. The defensible connections are a handful of career parallels and contrasts. Here are 21 ways to think about the comparison without mistaking interpretation for fact.
- A shared screen credit: They appeared in the same film, an unusually direct link between two careers often compared in retrospect.
- The same teen-comedy moment: The 1999 movie put each in a youthful, romantic comedy context, not in the darker or more adult roles that would later shape their screen identities.
- Different characters, different impressions: Ledger’s Patrick and Gordon-Levitt’s Cameron are not interchangeable archetypes; the comparison begins with the film, not identical roles.
- Early visibility: The shared film gave both a high-profile credit early in their careers, but it does not establish equal levels of fame or public reception.
- A starting point, not a destination: Neither actor’s career can be reduced to the teen comedy. Their later credits take them into markedly different stories and genres.
- Roles beyond the teen image: Ledger moved from the teen-heartthrob frame into work including Ned Kelly, Brokeback Mountain, and Candy, as the NFSA’s curated collection describes.
- Gordon-Levitt also shifted registers: His screen credits include the independent mystery Brick, the romantic drama (500) Days of Summer, and the science-fiction thriller Inception, among other projects.
- Comedy is part of both filmographies: Their shared teen comedy is a visible point of contact, but neither career is limited to comedy.
- Drama is part of the comparison: Later dramatic work makes it tempting to place them in a similar category of young actors who took on more demanding material; that is an interpretive grouping, not proof of matching technique.
- Genre changes matter: Gordon-Levitt’s credits range from television comedy in 3rd Rock from the Sun to features such as Don Jon and Project Power. Ledger’s career also covered varied film roles, according to the NFSA.
- Television and film both figure in Gordon-Levitt’s path: His timeline includes early film work such as A River Runs Through It, followed by the television series 3rd Rock from the Sun.
- Ledger’s path began in Australia: The National Portrait Gallery of Australia recounts his early Australian television and film work before his higher-profile international films. That trajectory differs from Gordon-Levitt’s, even as both began acting young.
- International projects expanded Ledger’s profile: The National Portrait Gallery’s account includes Two Hands, 10 Things I Hate About You, and The Patriot among the films in his career.
- Gordon-Levitt took a break from acting: Georgia Public Broadcasting’s 2020 profile recounts his early work, the teen comedy, and a period away from acting to attend Columbia University.
- Both are associated with career transitions: The analogy often hinges on what came after early recognition. The details of those transitions, however, are not the same.
- Supporting credits add context: A career is more than its most famous role. The variety of credits in Gordon-Levitt’s timeline and Ledger’s documented film roles complicates any simple “teen star” label.
- One actor’s work can prompt a retrospective comparison: When viewers encounter Gordon-Levitt in a later role, the shared early film can make Ledger a point of reference. That is a plausible reading, not a measured audience consensus.
- Screen presence is subjective: Viewers may find affinities in intensity, charisma, or the ability to shift tone, but the cited career histories do not establish a systematic comparison of acting style.
- Credits are firmer than claims about resemblance: The shared movie and later roles are documented. Statements that one performer acts like, looks like, or succeeds the other require separate evidence and should be treated as opinion.
- Legacy is not a transferable role: Ledger’s career and cultural impact belong to Ledger; Gordon-Levitt’s work stands on its own. Calling someone “the new” version of another can obscure that distinction.
- The comparison is strongest as a career prompt: It encourages a look at how two actors moved from early visibility into varied screen work, rather than proving that one is a successor to the other.
3. How their career arcs compare
Heath Ledger: from Australian work to varied films
The National Portrait Gallery of Australia traces Ledger’s early television and film work in Australia, followed by Two Hands and films including 10 Things I Hate About You and The Patriot. The NFSA describes 18 diverse film acting roles, including the transition from teen heartthrob to work in Ned Kelly, Brokeback Mountain, and Candy. The figure of 18 is the NFSA’s own description, not a fresh count of his complete filmography. See the National Portrait Gallery of Australia profile and NFSA collection.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt: from child roles to varied screen work
Gordon-Levitt’s credits span early film work such as A River Runs Through It, the sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun, and later films including Brick, (500) Days of Summer, Inception, Don Jon, and Project Power. 4. Where the comparison stops
The evidence supports a shared early film and a broad comparison of career variety. It does not establish that Gordon-Levitt is Ledger’s successor, that audiences generally see him that way, or that the two actors have equivalent styles or cultural impact. The NFSA’s account of Ledger’s roles and the career histories available for Gordon-Levitt document credits and transitions; they are not a controlled assessment of performance. Focus Features’ retrospective on Ledger offers another account of his work, but it does not make the comparison a fact: Focus Features’ remembrance of Heath Ledger.

5. So, is Joseph Gordon-Levitt “the new Heath Ledger”?
Only as a subjective shorthand. The phrase makes sense if it points to two actors who shared an early-career film and later appeared in varied screen work. It becomes misleading if it suggests replacement, identical acting, or an established public consensus. Gordon-Levitt’s career is his own; the strongest connection to Ledger remains the shared film and the comparison it invites.
