The best music subreddit depends on how you want to find your next listen: browse unfamiliar tracks, get recommendations based on a favorite artist, follow new releases, request a playlist, or explore one genre. This shortlist organizes 25 recommendations from a 2021 guide by discovery style—not by a verified popularity ranking. Subreddit rules and activity can change, so check a community’s current page before posting.

For broad discovery and unexpected tracks

  1. r/ListenToThis (now styled r/listentothis) — Browse music beyond the biggest mainstream hits. Its live page, checked October 7, 2026, showed a track feed and a weekly “Music Melting Pot” thread. The displayed rules include a popularity threshold, a preferred track format, and a limit on personal association or self-promotion outside that weekly thread.
  2. r/Music — A broad community for music discussion, news, and links. The 2021 guide described restrictions on links to artists on its Hall of Fame list; check the current rules rather than assuming that policy is unchanged.
  3. r/VintageObscura — Look for obscure older music. The original guide described its focus as music at least 25 years old; verify the community’s current definition and posting rules.

For recommendations based on what you already like

  1. r/IfYouLikeBlank — Ask for similar artists based on bands you already enjoy. Naming a few specific artists or tracks—and what you like about them—can make your request more useful.
  2. r/MusicMatch — Seek artists or music similar to your existing favorites.
  3. r/MusicSuggestions — Make a general music request when you have a mood, sound, or listening need in mind.

For new releases, discussion, and genre communities

Genre-focused communities can offer more than track recommendations: some combine new releases with discussion, recurring features, or community resources. Choose one based on the style you want and the kind of posts you want to browse.

  1. r/NewMusic — Find posts about new releases. The 2021 guide described source and recency requirements, but those details need checking on the live page.
  2. r/indieheads — Follow indie releases, news, discussion, and community features. Its page accessed during the week of October 7, 2026, showed fresh-release posts. A one-week window for song or video links was described in the older guide, so check current rules before submitting.
  3. r/Metal — Explore metal recommendations and discussion. The older guide described a weekly feature for bands below a Last.fm listener threshold; that historical detail is not a current rule unless the subreddit confirms it.
  4. r/ProgMetal — Look for progressive metal releases, recommendations, and album-release information.
  5. r/Rap — Browse rap and hip-hop sharing and discussion.
  6. r/Jazz — Explore jazz discussion and resources for beginners.
  7. r/Country — Follow country music, news, and discussion.
  8. r/popheads — Join pop discussion and community features.
  9. r/Rock — Find rock releases alongside discussion of older favorites.
  10. r/IndieRock — Browse indie rock and music that may be less widely known.
  11. r/ElectronicMusic — Find electronic tracks, videos, interviews, and discussion. The older guide also pointed to communities focused on EDM, techno, house, and mixes.
  12. r/Blues — Explore blues music and related communities.
  13. r/ClassicalMusic — Find classical music discussion and community wiki resources.
  14. r/Punk — Browse punk discovery and discussion. The older guide noted a day-specific restriction for some established artists; check whether that still applies.
  15. r/R&B — Explore R&B; the 2021 guide mentioned a “Fresh” flair, whose current availability should be verified.
  16. r/WorldMusic — Discover international, traditional, and regional music.

For playlists and music shared by listeners or artists

  1. r/MakeMeAPlaylist — Request a playlist for a particular occasion, activity, or need.
  2. r/SpotifyPlaylists — Browse playlists posted by other users. The older guide also mentioned a related playlist-request community; check its current name and purpose before using it.
  3. Redditor-made music communities — The 2021 guide grouped r/RadioReddit, r/ThisIsOurMusic, r/TheseAreOurAlbums, and r/ShareYourMusic as places to find music made or shared by Redditors. These four names appear together as one entry in that guide; check each community’s present purpose and submission rules before directing artists there.

How to choose a community

  • For a wide mix of styles: Start with a broad discovery feed such as r/listentothis.
  • For music like a known favorite: Try r/IfYouLikeBlank or r/MusicMatch and give specific reference artists, tracks, or qualities.
  • For recent releases: Browse r/NewMusic or r/indieheads, while checking live labels, link rules, and timing requirements.
  • For a ready-made listening session: Request one in r/MakeMeAPlaylist or browse user playlists in r/SpotifyPlaylists.
  • For a particular style: Choose a genre community, then see whether its current feed emphasizes recommendations, new releases, discussion, or community resources.

Check the rules before you post

Rules shape what appears in a subreddit and what members can submit. Popularity caps, required formatting, release windows, recurring threads, and self-promotion limits can all affect the experience. For example, r/listentothis’s visible October 2026 rules direct personal association and self-promotion to a weekly thread; that example should not be assumed to describe other communities. Open the specific subreddit’s current rules and pinned posts before sharing a track or asking for recommendations.

The shortlist draws on Online Tech Tips’ August 19, 2021 guide, so its descriptions of historical policies are not a substitute for current community rules. A live r/indieheads page accessed during the week of October 7, 2026 showed fresh-release posts alongside news, discussion, and community features. That supports using it as a place to explore indie music, but does not establish a definitive activity ranking for any subreddit.

You can also search Reddit for a community devoted to a specific artist. Artist-focused subreddits are a useful additional route, but they are not included in the 25-entry guide.
