Season 1 of Netflix’s 3 Body Problem leaves questions for its continuation, but the evidence does not establish a specific plot hole—a contradiction in the story’s own rules. The clearest open question is why Saul was chosen as a Wallfacer; Netflix says the answer is in Season 2. Will’s brain, launched into space by Project Staircase, is another unresolved thread, but its fate has not been confirmed.
What the Season 1 finale leaves unresolved
The finale ends with setbacks, not explanations. Jin’s Project Staircase plan has failed, and Will’s brain is floating through space. Saul has accepted an appointment as a Wallfacer, while Auggie has left the group and is using her nanofiber technology to help a local community. Netflix’s finale recap lays out those threads without resolving them.

In the closing scene, Da Shi takes a despondent Jin and Saul to a marsh filled with cicadas and urges them back to work. Co-creator David Benioff described them as grieving, with Da Shi unwilling to let grief become surrender. That ending frames the characters’ losses as a reason to continue, not as a conclusion to the conflict.
Why Saul was chosen as a Wallfacer
This is the most firmly signposted question for Season 2. Netflix’s Season 2 production update specifically asks why Saul was selected and says the answer is to be found in the next season. The creators’ statement confirms that the show intends to address the question; it does not reveal the answer.

Why the appointment matters
In the show’s fictional premise, Sophons can observe and disrupt human activity but cannot read minds. Wallfacers are therefore able to keep their plans internal. Netflix’s science explainer quotes series science advisor Dr. Matt Kenzie: “They can’t get into our mind, they can’t uncover your thoughts.” Kenzie also says Sophons struggle with deception and metaphor. That makes the choice of a Wallfacer narratively important, but it does not explain why Saul, specifically, was selected.
What happened to Will’s brain?
Project Staircase sends Will’s brain into space, but the cited official coverage does not say whether the probe reaches the San-Ti, can be recovered, or what happens if it is found. Those are open story questions—not evidence of a continuity error. Netflix’s finale recap establishes the launch and the plan’s failure, not the probe’s eventual fate.

It is possible to speculate about outcomes using Cixin Liu’s novels, but the Netflix adaptation changes narrative elements. A book-based deduction is not confirmation of what the series will show. Netflix says the creators intend to take the adaptation through the trilogy, but that broad aim does not confirm a particular Season 2 plot beat or a premiere date.
Is it really a plot hole?
Not on the evidence available from the finale and Netflix’s official follow-up. A plot hole requires a demonstrable contradiction—something the story establishes and then violates. An unexplained choice, a failed mission, or a character’s unknown fate can instead be a deliberate mystery or cliffhanger. Netflix’s explicit promise to address Saul’s selection strongly supports treating it as an unresolved question rather than calling it a proven error.

What Season 2 is confirmed to address
- Saul’s selection as a Wallfacer: Netflix says the answer is in Season 2.
- Will’s brain and Project Staircase: the cited official sources do not establish the probe’s destination or ultimate fate.
- The broader story: Netflix reported that the series was renewed for Seasons 2 and 3, with production beginning in Budapest in 2025. The creators said they want to complete the story through the final page of Liu’s trilogy; that is an adaptation goal, not a scene-by-scene synopsis.
Netflix also flags the significance of Jin and Will reading fairy tales as a mystery to keep in mind for the continuation. As with Saul’s appointment, the question is acknowledged, but its answer is not disclosed in the production update.

Viewers curious about the source material can read Cixin Liu’s The Dark Forest, the second novel in the trilogy. The Netflix series is adapted from Liu’s novels, and its creators have stated their ambition to reach the trilogy’s conclusion. The books offer another version of the story, not a guarantee of how the adaptation will resolve its open threads.
