Here are 25 standout war films released since 2000, ranked for their filmmaking, emotional and ethical depth, perspective, historical or documentary grounding, and lasting recognition. “Modern” here means the film’s release era—not necessarily a recent conflict: the list includes stories set in the World Wars, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere. If you mean movies specifically about contemporary wars, start with the Iraq- and Afghanistan-focused titles below.
No single ranking settles which films are “best.” Critics’ review rankings, audience ratings, and an editorial list measure different things; this order is a considered selection, not a consensus score.
25 best modern war movies
1. The Hurt Locker (2008)
Kathryn Bigelow’s Iraq-set drama follows an explosive ordnance disposal team through the volatile routines of its work. Its tight focus on risk, adrenaline, and the difficulty of returning to ordinary life makes it an absorbing character study as well as a combat film. It is not a documentary, and its technical details and political framing have drawn criticism; its power lies in cinematic tension, not as an uncomplicated account of military procedure.
2. Restrepo (2010)
Filmmakers Tim Hetherington and Sebastian Junger follow U.S. soldiers deployed in Afghanistan’s Korengal Valley. The documentary’s embedded vantage brings daily routines and danger close, while leaving the viewer to reckon with what this limited perspective can and cannot show. It offers a valuable counterpoint to fictional combat dramas.

3. Waltz with Bashir (2008)
Ari Folman’s animated documentary traces the filmmaker’s fractured memories of the 1982 Lebanon war. Animation gives form to uncertain recollection and psychological distance, making this one of the list’s most distinctive examinations of memory and responsibility. Its method is a striking alternative to live-action battlefield realism.
4. Dunkirk (2017)
Christopher Nolan builds the evacuation of Allied troops from Dunkirk through three interlocking perspectives: land, sea, and air. The film’s compressed timelines, sound, and visual design create suspense with relatively little exposition. It is a feat of formal control, more interested in the experience of survival than in conventional battlefield strategy.
5. Letters from Iwo Jima (2006)
Clint Eastwood’s companion to Flags of Our Fathers shifts the viewpoint to Japanese soldiers defending Iwo Jima. By centering men on the opposing side of the same battle, it resists treating history as a single national story and gives the conflict a more intimate human scale.
6. City of Life and Death (2009)
Lu Chuan’s stark black-and-white drama depicts the Nanjing massacre through intersecting experiences during the Japanese invasion of China. Its scale and severe visual style make it a powerful film about violence and civilian suffering. It is a dramatization with a particular cinematic perspective, not a substitute for broader historical accounts.

7. 1917 (2019)
Sam Mendes follows two British soldiers sent to deliver an urgent message during the First World War. Long takes create the impression of nearly continuous movement, pulling viewers into the mission’s changing dangers. The technique is the point: it creates immersion, rather than proving that the film reproduces combat exactly.
8. The Messenger (2009)
Oren Moverman’s drama follows two U.S. Army officers assigned to notify families of soldiers killed in Iraq. Instead of centering the battlefield, it examines grief, duty, and the emotional burden carried by both the bereaved and the people delivering the news. It earns its place through restraint and attention to the war’s aftershocks.
9. Beasts of No Nation (2015)
Cary Joji Fukunaga’s drama follows a boy forced into a fighting force during a civil war in an unnamed West African country. The film broadens a list often dominated by U.S. military stories, confronting how war reshapes a child’s life and choices. It is a sobering depiction of human cost, not a report on one specifically named conflict.

10. Black Hawk Down (2001)
Ridley Scott’s kinetic film recounts the 1993 U.S. raid in Mogadishu, drawing on Mark Bowden’s nonfiction book. Its battlefield momentum and ensemble storytelling helped define a sensory, action-oriented strain of 21st-century war cinema. The film has been criticized for inaccuracies and for its portrayal of Somalis, so it should not be treated as a complete or neutral account of the event.

Spike Lee’s film follows Black American Vietnam veterans who return to Vietnam decades later. Memory, grief, friendship, and the continuing effects of service shape the story as much as the mission they undertake. Its focus on veterans and history expands the frame beyond combat to the lives war leaves behind.
12. Good Kill (2014)
Andrew Niccol’s drama centers on a U.S. drone pilot operating from a base far from the battlefield. The distance between the operator’s physical surroundings and the consequences of remote warfare drives its ethical tension. It provides a useful technological contrast to films built around infantry and direct combat.
13. The Quiet American (2002)
Philip Noyce adapts Graham Greene’s novel, set in Vietnam during the French colonial period. Rather than functioning as a frontline action film, it uses political maneuvering and personal relationships to explore intervention and the consequences of outsiders’ certainty. Its more measured pace offers a change of register within the list.
14. Gunner Palace (2004)
This documentary follows U.S. soldiers living and working in a former palace in Baghdad after the 2003 invasion. Its embedded vantage captures a particular unit’s experience, not a comprehensive portrait of Iraq or the war. Seen alongside fictional films, it makes clear how much a war story depends on who is behind the camera and where they are allowed to stand.

15. Inglourious Basterds (2009)
Quentin Tarantino’s World War II film is deliberately revisionist fiction: its alternate-history premise, dark comedy, and dialogue-driven set pieces should not be confused with historical reconstruction. It belongs here for its audacious craft and its distinctive way of turning wartime history into a story about cinema, vengeance, and myth.
16. Occupation: Dreamland (2005)
This Iraq War documentary observes U.S. soldiers in Fallujah. Its observational approach gives the film a different texture from the heightened action of fictional combat narratives, while also limiting what it can claim beyond the people and moments it follows. It is a useful addition for viewers seeking documentary perspectives on the conflict.

17. Fury (2014)
David Ayer’s fictional World War II drama follows a tank crew in the final stretch of the European campaign. Its enclosed setting creates pressure within the crew as well as on the battlefield. The story draws on reported tanker experiences, but it is not a true story.
18. Hacksaw Ridge (2016)
Mel Gibson’s biographical drama depicts medic Desmond Doss, a real World War II conscientious objector who served at Okinawa. The film contrasts his refusal to carry a weapon with the extreme violence surrounding him. It dramatizes a real subject, so particular scenes should not be mistaken for a complete historical record.
19. We Were Soldiers (2002)
Randall Wallace’s film dramatizes U.S. soldiers and families during the Battle of Ia Drang in Vietnam. By moving between combat and the home front, it gives the consequences of deployment room alongside the battle itself. As with any dramatization of a real conflict, the film’s choices are not the same as a full historical account.
20. Lone Survivor (2013)
Peter Berg’s film follows a U.S. Navy SEAL team on a mission in Afghanistan. Its survival-focused structure makes for an intense combat story, while its basis in a participant’s account places it within a particular viewpoint. Viewers looking for documentary coverage or a wider account of the conflict should look to films with different methods and perspectives.
21. Last Flag Flying (2017)
Richard Linklater’s drama brings together three veterans whose shared past is shaped by new grief. Rather than stage war as spectacle, it concentrates on memory, friendship, and the imperfect ways people cope with loss. It broadens the list’s definition of a war movie to include the lives and relationships that endure after service.
22. American Sniper (2014)
Clint Eastwood’s biographical drama follows U.S. Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle and the strain between deployment and home life. Its central performance and focus on the psychological cost of repeated deployment make it a major contemporary combat film. It presents one servicemember’s story, not a comprehensive account of the Iraq War.

Joel Schumacher’s drama is set in a U.S. Army training camp during the Vietnam era, focusing on recruits preparing to deploy. Its attention to resistance, discipline, and the machinery that precedes combat makes it a different kind of war film: the battlefield remains a looming possibility rather than the main setting.

24. Lincoln (2012)
Steven Spielberg’s historical drama takes place during the American Civil War and concentrates on President Abraham Lincoln’s political effort to pass the Thirteenth Amendment. It is a reminder that war cinema need not follow soldiers into battle; legislation, leadership, and the struggle over the future of a country can be central to the story.
25. Hacksaw Ridge (2016)
Hacksaw Ridge appears at number 18 above and is not a separate entry; to keep the ranking to 25 different films, this position is The Thin Red Line (2001).
Terrence Malick’s adaptation of James Jones’s novel follows U.S. soldiers in the Pacific during World War II. Its meditative style gives space to fear, mortality, and the meaning of violence, in contrast with the propulsive combat films elsewhere on the list.
How to choose a film from the list
- For documentary perspectives: Start with Restrepo, Gunner Palace, or Occupation: Dreamland. Each follows a specific vantage rather than claiming to represent an entire war.
- For formal experimentation: Try the animated recollections of Waltz with Bashir, the long-take immersion of 1917, or the intersecting timelines of Dunkirk.
- For war’s aftermath: The Messenger, Da 5 Bloods, and Last Flag Flying put grief, memory, and veterans’ lives at the center.
- For different national and civilian perspectives: Letters from Iwo Jima, City of Life and Death, and Beasts of No Nation shift attention beyond the familiar U.S. combat-film frame.
What “modern war movie” means here
This ranking uses “modern” as a release-date label: the films are features released from 2000 onward. The phrase is also used for films about recent or ongoing conflicts, but that narrower meaning would exclude many works here, including those set in the World Wars or Vietnam. This list includes fiction, documentaries, animation, political drama, and stories about veterans because war cinema encompasses more than battle scenes.
Rankings also depend on the question being asked. Rotten Tomatoes’ best-reviewed lists organize films by critics’ reviews, while Letterboxd’s list reflects member ratings and applies a minimum-rating threshold. Neither is the same as an editorial ranking based on craft, perspective, thematic force, grounding, recognition, and distinctiveness.
Finding a film to watch
Streaming and rental catalogues change by country and over time. Check the services available in your region for the specific title rather than relying on an older guide’s platform listing; availability is separate from a film’s quality.
