The dates below are U.S.-oriented schedule dates, not confirmation of what ultimately opened in every territory or remains available to stream. Looking for documentaries in particular? The schedule included I Like Me, a John Candy documentary planned for Prime Video, and Orwell: 2+2=5. The broader calendar also ranged from franchise sequels to dramas, animation and independent films. The Associated Press’s fall 2025 guide offers a broad selection; official studio and platform announcements supply some additional release details.
How to read the fall 2025 release calendar
Dates are presented as they appeared in the cited U.S.-oriented guide or studio and platform schedules. “In theaters” does not guarantee a wide release, and streaming announcements may describe a limited theatrical window before an online premiere. Release plans can change and vary by country; a distributor’s or platform’s listing is the best source for a specific local date. The calendar is curated, not an exhaustive worldwide list.
One practical way to narrow the slate is to start with format and date, then consider genre, familiarity with a franchise, and the filmmakers or cast. That separates a streaming documentary from a theatrical sequel, for example, without treating any one company’s slate as the whole season.

September 2025 releases
September 5: horror and an independent drama
- In theaters: The Conjuring: Last Rites. A returning supernatural-horror franchise entry.
- In theaters: Twinless. An independent title on the same date in the AP guide.
September 12: a period series finale and a drama
- In theaters: Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. The next screen chapter for the established historical-drama property.
- In theaters: The History of Sound. A drama listed by AP for September 12.
September 26: several different kinds of releases
- In theaters: One Battle After Another.
- In theaters: Eleanor the Great.
- In theaters: Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie. A family-oriented title based on the children’s property.
- In theaters: The Strangers: Chapter 2. A horror sequel.

October 2025 releases
October 1–3: streaming crime, drama, documentary and more
- Prime Video, October 1: Play Dirty. Amazon’s announced date was for the service’s streaming slate.
- In theaters, October 3: The Smashing Machine, Anemone, Shelby Oaks and Orwell: 2+2=5. AP lists these titles for the first Friday of October; the mix includes drama, horror and documentary work.
- IMAX/3D re-release, October 3: Avatar: The Way of Water. Disney announced a theatrical re-release, distinct from the season’s new-film premieres.
October 10: theatrical releases and a Prime Video documentary
- In theaters: Roofman, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Tron: Ares and After the Hunt. These are among the titles AP lists for October 10.
- In theaters: Tron: Ares. Disney described the science-fiction story as following a sophisticated Program sent from the digital world into the real world.
- In theaters: After the Hunt. Amazon described Luca Guadagnino’s film as a psychological drama starring Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri and Andrew Garfield.
- Prime Video, October 10: I Like Me. Amazon’s schedule identified this as a documentary about John Candy.
October 16–24: streaming drama and theatrical releases
- Prime Video, October 16: Culpa Nuestra. Amazon’s announced streaming date.
- In theaters, October 22: Hedda. The date comes from Amazon’s fall slate.
- In theaters, October 24: Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere. Disney’s announcement describes the film as centered on the making of Bruce Springsteen’s 1982 album Nebraska.
November 2025 releases
November 7–14: science fiction, drama and a mystery
- In theaters, November 7: Predator: Badlands. Disney describes the story as taking place on a remote planet and following an outcast young Predator and an unlikely ally.
- Select theaters, November 14: Jay Kelly. Netflix’s fall page listed a limited theatrical window. A select-theater date is not the same as a nationwide opening.
November 21–26: family animation and a new drama
- In theaters, November 21: Rental Family. Listed on Disney’s schedule.
- Select theaters in November: Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. Netflix announced a theatrical window in November, without a specific date in the cited fall listing.
- In theaters, November 26: Zootopia 2. Disney’s schedule placed the animated sequel on the day before Thanksgiving in the United States.
December 2025 releases
December 12: a theatrical comedy-drama and a Netflix premiere
- In theaters, December 12: Ella McCay. Listed on Disney’s schedule.
- Netflix, December 12: Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. Netflix’s schedule placed its streaming premiere after the November select-theater window.
December 19: two theatrical releases
- In theaters: Avatar: Fire and Ash. Disney announced the date as December 19.
- In theaters: Is This Thing On? Disney’s schedule listed the Searchlight film for the same date.
December 25: historical drama
- In theaters, December 25: The Testament of Ann Lee. Disney’s slate placed it on Christmas Day.
What the slate offered documentary viewers
The clearest documentary entry in the cited fall schedules is I Like Me, announced by Amazon as a John Candy documentary for Prime Video on October 10. AP also listed Orwell: 2+2=5 for October 3. These are separate titles and release plans; neither schedule establishes where either film can be watched now.

For viewers who prefer films grounded in real people or events, Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere offers another nonfiction-adjacent subject through its focus on the making of Nebraska, though Disney describes it as a film about that period rather than labeling it a documentary. The schedule alone is not enough to make claims about each title’s final genre, reception or present availability.
How to choose what to revisit
- Start with format: separate a theatrical opening, a select-theater engagement and a streaming premiere before making plans.
- Choose by genre or mood: the calendar spans horror, science fiction, family animation, drama, mystery and documentary.
- Use franchise familiarity as a filter: Tron: Ares, Predator: Badlands, Zootopia 2, Avatar: Fire and Ash and Wake Up Dead Man build on known screen properties, while the slate also includes independent and original work.
- Check the final local listing: the announced date is a schedule snapshot, not proof of the eventual release date or current catalog status in your territory.
The Long Walk, also included in AP’s broader fall guide, is described there as an adaptation of a Stephen King novel. Readers interested in the source material can look for an available edition of the novel separately; the book and film are distinct works.
