There is no single text called Ang Alamat ng Palay: the title refers to several different retellings. The 2012 Adarna House picture book by Virgilio S. Almario follows Banag and Danas, while an Ibaloi legend in the Sandaang Salaysay materials follows Dackbongan and Kabunian. If you need a particular full text for class or reading, identify the edition first; the available sources describe these works but do not establish an authorized free full-text copy.

Which version of Ang Alamat ng Palay do you mean?

The title means “The Legend of Rice,” but it does not identify one definitive story. Published books and oral-folklore retellings use different characters and plots. Check the author or teller, characters, language, and format before treating a text found online as the version you need.

Version What it is Story or edition details
Adarna House, 2012 Bilingual illustrated picture book Story by Virgilio S. Almario; illustrated by Conrad Raquel; follows Banag and Danas. ISBN 9789715084185. [Adarna House publisher page]
Sandaang Salaysay Ibaloi retelling Folklore podcast material and a transcript hosted on Slideshare Follows Dackbongan and Kabunian; the transcript credits Sandaang Salaysay. [Transcript] [Areté/Ateneo series page]
Victoria Anonuevo, circa 1992 A separate cataloged book Ang alamat ng palay / The legend of rice, with Children’s Communication Center (Philippines) as corporate author; cataloged by the University of the Philippines Libraries as Filipino and English language versions. [UP Libraries catalog record]

What happens in the Sandaang Salaysay Ibaloi retelling?

In this version, Dackbongan is a mambunong, or ritual specialist, and Kabunian teaches him to cultivate rice. Kabunian also prescribes the Kosday kanyaw ritual. When Dackbongan neglects it, mice threaten the crop; cats are then created to eat the mice. These are events in the retelling’s legendary plot, not evidence that the story records historical events or a definitive account of every Ibaloi telling.

The transcript says the story was published in the Baguio Midland Courier on January 1, 1950, and translated from English by Paolo Ven B. Paculan. That provenance is reported by the transcript; the original newspaper issue has not been verified here. The Slideshare text is therefore best labeled as a transcript of the Sandaang Salaysay retelling, not as an archival original or the sole authoritative wording.

What does the Adarna House book contain?

Adarna House describes its 2012 picture book as a story by Virgilio S. Almario, illustrated by Conrad Raquel, with Filipino (Tagalog) text and an English translation. It has 32 pages and is recommended by the publisher for readers aged 10 and up. Its synopsis follows Banag and Danas and connects their story to the beginning of agriculture in the Philippines. The publisher presents it as one among many legends about rice, not the only version. [Adarna House publisher page]

For a complete illustrated book, use the ISBN, 9789715084185, to distinguish this edition when searching or asking a bookseller. The publisher page documents the edition; it does not establish current stock or availability from any particular retailer.

How should you choose a full text?

  • For Banag and Danas: look for Almario’s 2012 Adarna House picture book, ISBN 9789715084185.
  • For Dackbongan and Kabunian: label the material as the Sandaang Salaysay Ibaloi retelling, and treat the Slideshare item as a transcript rather than an original 1950 newspaper copy.
  • If a class assignment names another author: check the exact edition. The UP Libraries catalog also records a separate circa-1992 book by Victoria Anonuevo; it should not be conflated with Almario’s later book.
  • If you need a specific language or format: verify whether the item is a complete printed book, an audio retelling, or a transcript, and whether it includes Filipino, English, or both.

Why the story matters

These versions connect rice with cultivation, community knowledge, and Filipino cultural life, but they do so through distinct narratives. The Philippine Embassy in Sweden’s June 18, 2024 release describes the story as concerning the discovery of rice and its importance in Filipino life; that is cultural framing, not a measure of rice consumption or the story’s popularity.
