Andor’s adult Cassian opening is commonly placed around BBY 5 because season one is set five years before Rogue One; that is a timeline conversion, not a date displayed in the scene.
What does BBY mean?
BBY stands for “before the Battle of Yavin.” It answers the question: how many years before that battle did an event happen? StarWars.com gives the example “BBY 1 (One year before Battle of Yavin).” The number counts down toward the battle, so a higher BBY number means an earlier point in the fictional chronology.
It is a Star Wars timeline marker, not a date on our calendar. The official explanation establishes the relationship to the Battle of Yavin, not an Earth-calendar year for Andor’s opening.
How does that apply to Andor’s opening?
The adult Morlana One sequence
The opening follows adult Cassian in the rain on Morlana One. He enters a brothel and later has a confrontation with two local officers. StarWars.com places the first season five years before the events of Rogue One. Mapping that season-level placement onto the Battle of Yavin chronology puts the adult opening around BBY 5.

That “around BBY 5” label is an inference from the relative timeline. It is not wording shown as an opening-scene caption. StarWars.com describes Andor as a Disney+ original and provides the season’s relationship to Rogue One in its season-one interview and series page.
The Kenari flashbacks
Episode 1, “Kassa,” also cuts to Cassian as a child—then called Kassa—and his sister on Kenari. Those flashbacks belong to an earlier narrative layer than the adult Morlana One sequence. The common BBY 5 placement refers to the adult season-one timeline, not every scene in the premiere. StarWars.com’s episode-one highlights describe the Kenari material.

Where does season two fit?
Season two begins later in the countdown, at BBY 4. In StarWars.com’s season-two cast article, writer Kristin Baver states, “The year is BBY 4.” The same official coverage says the season’s arcs bridge the four years leading up to Rogue One. That later placement is consistent with season one’s adult timeline being around BBY 5; it does not make the opening scene a season-two event.
