She left the daily anchor role, not NBC News: the network said she would continue as chief Washington and chief foreign policy correspondent, with more focus on reporting in the field.
When did Andrea Mitchell leave her MSNBC show?
Mitchell announced the change on Oct. 29, 2024, saying she planned to stop anchoring after the January 2025 presidential inauguration. Her final broadcast of Andrea Mitchell Reports was Friday, Feb. 7, 2025, according to the official MS NOW description of the program’s last show: MS NOW’s final-show video. TV Insider had previewed that date on Feb. 5.
Why did she leave the anchor chair?
Mitchell said she wanted more time to connect, listen and report in the field. In remarks quoted by the Associated Press, she explained: “After 16 years of being in the anchor chair every day, I want time to do more of what I love the most – more connecting, listening and reporting in the field, especially as whoever is elected president is going to undertake the monumental task of handling two foreign wars and the political divisions here at home.” The Associated Press announcement coverage and Los Angeles Times report record her public explanation; neither establishes a separate private motive.
Did Andrea Mitchell retire or leave NBC News?
No. The change was from daily host to correspondent. MS NOW’s Feb. 7, 2025 description said Mitchell would remain at NBC News as chief Washington and chief foreign policy correspondent, focusing on field reporting. The available evidence establishes the role announced at that time, not her current assignment status.

Why do reports say both 16 and 17 years?
The figures reflect how sources described her tenure at different points, rather than a contradiction that can be resolved into one exact count from these reports.
- 16 years: The Associated Press and The Washington Post used this figure in coverage of Mitchell’s Oct. 29, 2024 announcement. The Washington Post also reported that she had been at NBC News for 46 years at that time: The Washington Post’s announcement coverage.
- 17 years: The official MS NOW description of her Feb. 7, 2025 final show called it the end of 17 years as an MSNBC anchor.
The show launched in 2008. Keeping each tenure figure tied to its source and date avoids implying greater precision than the reports support.
