Clifton Williams was arrested on May 17, 2024, and indicted on June 4 in connection with two alleged assaults on Manhattan’s Third Avenue, including an attack on actor Steve Buscemi. The indictment charged Williams with one count of second-degree assault and two counts of third-degree assault. Those charges are allegations, not proof of guilt.
What happened in Manhattan
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said the incidents took place on May 8, 2024, on Third Avenue. At about 11:30 a.m., a 22-year-old man was allegedly punched near East 15th Street. About nine minutes later, at approximately 11:39 a.m., a 66-year-old man was allegedly punched near East 27th Street in Kips Bay.
The second alleged victim was Steve Buscemi. ABC News reported that he received treatment for bruising, swelling and bleeding around his left eye. His representative said he was okay.
Arrest, arraignment and indictment
| Stage | What was reported |
|---|---|
| May 17, 2024: arrest | CBS New York reported that Clifton Williams, then 50, was arrested after officers recognized him at a Manhattan precinct. |
| May 18–19, 2024: arraignment and bail | The Associated Press reported that Williams was arraigned and bail was set at $50,000. AP attributed its account of the two alleged assaults and surveillance footage to the criminal complaint. |
| June 4, 2024: indictment | The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office announced one second-degree assault count and two third-degree assault counts. |
What the charges mean
The Manhattan DA classified the second-degree assault count as a class D felony and each third-degree assault count as a class A misdemeanor. The indictment concerns allegations arising from the two incidents; an arrest and indictment do not establish that the defendant committed the offenses.
