Spoilers for all four seasons, especially Season 4, Episode 6. The Hargreeves siblings choose to let the Cleanse consume them because the Marigold inside them is sustaining the catastrophic timelines. Their disappearance restores one ordinary timeline, where the Academy is unknown to the public. The surviving children remember their family; the finale’s explanations leave some other questions unresolved.
What triggers the Cleanse?
Ben carries Marigold, while Jennifer carries its counterpart, Durango. Abigail explains that Marigold’s creation also produced Durango; when Ben and Jennifer come together, the two forces trigger the Cleanse. This is the series’ supernatural premise, not a real-world account of particles. Netflix’s complete timeline lays out the story’s intended explanation.

Why does Abigail want the Cleanse?
Abigail admits she created Marigold and feels responsible for the destruction of her planet. She also believes she did not deserve to be brought back to life by Reginald. Those feelings drive her effort to bring about the Cleanse, even as she tries to keep Ben and Jennifer apart until events unfold on her terms, according to Netflix’s timeline explanation.
Why do the siblings sacrifice themselves?
The siblings conclude that the Marigold within them is the anomaly sustaining the recurring catastrophic timelines. They let the Cleanse consume them to eliminate that anomaly and restore a single timeline. The finale frames this as a collective choice to save the world, not a victory that earns them public recognition. Netflix’s ending explainer describes the decision and its result.

Are the siblings dead, or did they disappear?
Showrunner Steve Blackman says the siblings do not technically die: they cease to exist in a way that erases them from every timeline, leaving the public with no memory of the Academy. The surviving family is the exception that remembers them. In Netflix Tudum’s August 8, 2024 explanation, Blackman put it this way: “I didn’t want them to ‘die’ because they don’t technically die. But they will cease to exist in a way that no one will ever know that they ever were in any timeline, in any place.”
How do Claire and Lila and Diego’s children survive?
Before the Cleanse takes the adults, the group sends the children through the special subway portal into the restored timeline. Blackman’s interview with Netflix Tudum explains that the portal lets them enter the timeline in a way others could not. The children remember their parents and uncles, although the wider world does not remember the Academy. Blackman also acknowledges that time can be understood in different ways, so this is the writers’ intended time-travel logic rather than a fully formalized system.

What does the final ordinary day mean?
Netflix’s timeline account ends on August 8, 2024, with an unremarkable day in the restored timeline. The apocalypse has been prevented and ordinary life continues, without the public knowing what the siblings gave up. The final park scene serves as an emotional coda; background cameos are not needed to explain the plot’s outcome.
What happened to Sloane?
The series does not settle Sloane’s fate. Blackman says he thinks she is somewhere in the reset timeline, but leaves open whether the reset created her, whether she remembers anything, or whether she can find Luther. Treat her status as unresolved, not as a confirmed reunion or a confirmed erasure. His Netflix Tudum interview gives his view without closing those questions.

Blackman says Ray felt displaced in the reset timeline and left because he did not feel he belonged there. He says Allison and Claire had done nothing wrong. This is offscreen backstory explained in his interview with Netflix Tudum, rather than an event shown during Season 4.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the finale explain every multiverse detail?
No. Netflix’s official timeline gives the intended outcome: after the siblings are consumed, the Cleanse restores one ordinary timeline and the recurring apocalypse ends. The official explanation does not provide a complete mechanism for every alternate timeline, paradox, or possible Marigold bearer. The ending’s stated answers can be distinguished from those story-world details it leaves open.
