Spoilers for the Culling Game arc. The Culling Game begins with eight rules governing who must participate, how players earn points, and how they can propose changes. Later additions create options such as sharing points, leaving by inviting a substitute, and crossing colony barriers; they are not part of the original eight. The distinction matters because two separate 19-day deadlines can put a player’s cursed technique at risk.

What are the original eight Culling Game rules?

The original rules are introduced around chapter 143. The detailed list below follows the Culling Game reference and chapter 143 summary; consult the manga for the exact wording in a particular edition.

1. Newly awakened technique users must declare participation

After a cursed technique awakens, the person must declare participation at a colony of their choice within 19 days. This is the entry deadline for newly awakened technique users—not the timer that applies to a player whose score stops changing.

2. Missing that declaration deadline risks technique removal

A player who does not declare participation within the required period faces cursed-technique removal. The rule makes the declaration deadline consequential rather than optional.

3. Entering a colony makes a non-player a player

A non-player who enters a colony is treated as having declared participation and becomes a player. Entering therefore carries a different consequence from simply choosing a colony after awakening a technique.

4. Killing another player earns points

Players gain points by killing other players. The rules assign point values to players, but the precise values are not needed to understand the basic mechanic: a kill changes the killer’s score, and scores matter to later rule options and the inactivity timer.

5. The game master determines point values

The game master, rather than each player, determines the point value assigned to players. This is separate from the rule allowing players to spend points to propose changes.

6. A player may spend 100 points to propose a rule

A player can use 100 points—excluding the value of their own life—to negotiate with the game master and propose one new rule. Higuruma’s score made him important to Yuji and Megumi’s effort to create an opening in the game, as Shueisha’s Volume 19 synopsis describes.

7. A proposed rule cannot seriously disrupt the game’s continuation

The rule-making power is limited: a proposed addition must not have a marked, lasting effect on the game. The 100-point threshold is not permission to rewrite the system without restriction.

8. An unchanged score for 19 days triggers technique removal

A player whose score has not changed for 19 days faces cursed-technique removal. This timer concerns score stagnation, not the initial deadline to declare participation.

How do the two 19-day deadlines differ?

Deadline Who it affects What starts the clock Consequence
Participation declaration A newly awakened technique user The awakening of their cursed technique Failure to declare participation risks cursed-technique removal.
Score change A player A period in which the player’s score does not change Technique removal applies under the rule.

Both periods are 19 days, but they measure different things. One requires a newly awakened user to enter the game; the other pressures an existing player to keep their score from remaining unchanged.

What rules were added later?

Players use the 100-point rule-making provision to add options that change how the game works in practice. These later additions should be kept separate from the initial list; the Culling Game reference describes additions associated with Kashimo, Higuruma, Megumi, and Yorozu, as well as later changes by Kenjaku. The source summaries establish the functions below, but the exact attribution and sequence should be checked against the relevant manga chapters.

Information about players and colonies

A later rule makes player information available, including names, scores, rule additions, and colony. That information helps players identify whom to seek out and understand how the game is changing.

Point transfers

Players can transfer points. This gives them a way to alter a score without relying only on kills, which can matter under the rule penalizing an unchanged score.

Leaving by inviting a substitute

A player can spend 100 points to invite a substitute and leave. The option is conditional: it does not establish an unrestricted right to exit without a replacement.

Movement across colony barriers

A later addition allows movement into and out of colonies across their barriers. This changes where players can go, rather than changing the original rule that entry by a non-player makes that person a player.

Kenjaku’s later changes

Kenjaku’s later changes address the admission of new players and the game’s end conditions. They modify how the game proceeds; they are not among the eight rules stated at its beginning.

What is the Culling Game’s broader purpose?

The rules describe the contest’s immediate mechanics, while the larger plan involves Kenjaku, Tengen, and Japan’s population. The Crunchyroll guide to the Culling Game discusses that broader context. The rule list alone does not establish every detail of the planned merger, so it is useful to distinguish the game’s operating rules from the ritual’s wider purpose.

Where can you check the rules in the manga?

Chapter 143 is a useful starting point for the initial rules, with later chapters expanding on the game and its additions. VIZ’s Jujutsu Kaisen listing provides chapter and collection information. Shueisha’s Volume 19 catalog entry confirms the publisher’s story context for seeking out Higuruma to add a rule; it does not establish that the volume contains the original full rule list.
