Kyle Shanahan’s father is Mike Shanahan, the former NFL head coach who led the Denver Broncos to consecutive Super Bowl titles after the 1997 and 1998 seasons. Their careers connected on the field, too: Kyle worked on his father’s Washington coaching staff from 2010 to 2013.
Who is Kyle Shanahan’s dad?
Mike Shanahan is Kyle Shanahan’s father. Mike’s career included head-coaching jobs with the Los Angeles Raiders, Denver Broncos and Washington, as well as an earlier stint as San Francisco’s offensive coordinator. The family connection is part of Kyle’s football background, but their records and accomplishments belong to separate coaching careers.
Mike Shanahan’s two Super Bowl wins with Denver
Shanahan coached the Broncos from 1995 through 2008. As Denver’s head coach, he guided the team to consecutive Super Bowl victories: Super Bowl XXXII, played after the 1997 season, and Super Bowl XXXIII, after the 1998 season. The Broncos’ Ring of Fame profile identifies him as the franchise’s regular-season wins leader, with 138, and credits him with eight postseason wins. Those are Broncos-published franchise figures.
The Broncos’ Ring of Fame is a team honor; it is not the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The same profile gives Shanahan a 170–138 (.552) overall head-coaching record across 20 seasons with the Raiders, Broncos and Washington. That career total is distinct from his 138 regular-season wins as Denver’s coach.

Mike Shanahan’s coaching career
Shanahan’s NFL career included work as an assistant and head coach. The NFL’s 2025 Broncos media guide and the 49ers’ official biography document his work across several teams.
- Los Angeles Raiders: Head coach from 1988 to 1989.
- San Francisco 49ers: Offensive coordinator from 1992 to 1994.
- Denver Broncos: Head coach from 1995 to 2008, including the two Super Bowl championship seasons.
- Washington: Head coach from 2010 to 2013.
The 49ers biography also records a third Super Bowl title in Shanahan’s career as an assistant: it came during his San Francisco tenure, not as Denver’s head coach.

How Mike’s career intersected with Kyle’s
Kyle joined his father’s Washington staff from 2010 to 2013. NFL.com has described Kyle’s experience growing up around the Broncos during Mike’s tenure, offering context for his early exposure to professional football without reducing his own coaching path to family inheritance.
Kyle has also spoken about seeing the difficult side of his father’s career. In AP coverage, he recalled Mike’s earlier Super Bowl losses as Denver’s coordinator: “I remember seeing my dad after those Super Bowls when I was a kid and how hard it was on him.”

Mike and Kyle Shanahan: keep the records separate
Mike’s championships and coaching totals are not Kyle’s. Mike was Denver’s head coach for its consecutive Super Bowl wins in XXXII and XXXIII; the shared Washington staff years mark a professional connection between the two, not a combined coaching record.
