- A big summer blockbuster, Pearl Harbor is pitched as a romantic epic, but the story is essentially a frame for an impressive depiction of the Japanese attack on that "day of infamy", deploying all the model work, CGI, stunts and special effects necessary to trump previous screen re-enactments in Tora! Tora! Tora! and From Here to Eternity.
How did Lily Sheen decide to act?
Sheen has said she initially resisted the expectation that she would follow her parents into acting. She was interested in writing, then began to enjoy acting through school Shakespeare productions at around age 15. She described performing as a way to experience feelings from another person’s perspective. In a 2022 W Magazine interview, she also said her parents supported her trying different things rather than directing her toward a particular career: “My parents would be happy with me doing anything.” W Magazine, 2022.
W Magazine reports that Sheen briefly attended New York University and studied the Meisner technique. The account says she attended briefly; it does not establish that she graduated. Her description of first pursuing writing and later discovering acting gives a more personal account of her path than the assumption that a family of actors determined her career.

What have Kate Beckinsale and Michael Sheen said about supporting her?
Beckinsale has said she wants Lily to develop her own interests and make her own choices. In an October 2021 Entertainment Tonight interview, she said she gives career advice “only when asked,” adding: “I’m not calling her up and saying, ‘Now, I’ve got a pearl of wisdom, get ready!’” Beckinsale also said she respects and admires her daughter’s wish to be independent from her parents. Entertainment Tonight, October 14, 2021.
Michael Sheen’s account offers a separate glimpse into their family history. In a 2024 Guardian profile, he recalled that after he and Beckinsale separated in 2003, he stayed in Los Angeles to be close to Lily. The interview also describes their co-parenting relationship as having had ups and downs; his recollection is not a complete account of the family’s arrangements. The Guardian, August 31, 2024.
