Rather than claim a subjective “best to worst” ranking without a consistent assessment of every title, this guide ranks the feature films by their Academy nomination totals and lists the short-film nominees by category. Nomination count is an awards measure, not a quality score. The 98th Academy Awards honored films released in 2025 and took place March 15, 2026, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood. How the ranking works
The Academy’s official nominations packet identifies 35 feature titles, excluding shorts, and lists five nominees in each of the three short-film categories. Together, those lists contain 50 distinct films. The feature titles below are ordered by number of nominations, from most to fewest; films tied on nominations remain tied. This is a transparent way to rank them using official records, but it does not say which film is artistically best. (Academy nominations packet)

Who won Best Picture?
One Battle after Another won Best Picture at the 98th Academy Awards. That result is a separate comparison from nomination totals: the film with the most nominations, Sinners, was not the Best Picture winner. The Academy’s ceremony record lists winners and nominees. (Academy ceremony record)

What this ranking can—and cannot—tell you
A nomination total measures how often a film appeared on the Academy’s ballots. It does not establish a hierarchy of quality, and a tie does not imply that two films are alike in subject, form or achievement. The Best Picture result offers another useful distinction: a win records an award outcome, while the table records nominations.
The full 50-film field spans narrative features, documentaries, animation, international films and shorts. For a documentary-focused starting point, the nominated feature documentaries are The Alabama Solution, Come See Me in the Good Light, Cutting through Rocks, Mr. Nobody against Putin and The Perfect Neighbor; the documentary shorts are listed above. The Academy packet supplies the categories and counts, not a viewing-based ranking across those different forms.
