Season 1 is the best season of Stranger Things. Its missing-child mystery, ensemble storytelling and emotional focus make it the series’ most cohesive chapter. This ranking weighs narrative cohesion, character development, pacing, tone and payoff; it is an editorial judgment, not a universal verdict.
How the five seasons compare
Rotten Tomatoes’ listed critic scores offer one comparison, but they measure aggregated critic approval—not a definitive quality ranking. At the time of access, the scores were: Season 1, 97%; Season 2, 94%; Season 3, 89%; Season 4, 89%; and Season 5, 83%. Scores can change. The ranking below instead considers how well each season balances its story, characters, tone and resolution.
| Rank | Season | Rotten Tomatoes critic score at access | Why it lands here |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | Season 5 | 83% | Emotionally resonant ending, but an uneven final run |
| 4 | Season 2 | 94% | Memorable additions and character pairings, interrupted momentum |
| 3 | Season 4 | 89% | Ambitious horror and standout sequences, with an uneven multi-location plot |
| 2 | Season 3 | 89% | Strong summer energy, comic chemistry and a spectacular climax |
| 1 | Season 1 | 97% | The tightest mystery and the series’ most balanced ensemble |
The critic-score figures are Rotten Tomatoes’ listed scores at access, not fixed ratings. Season 3 and Season 4 are tied at 89%, so their order here reflects editorial preference. A separate TVLine ranking by Noah Villaverde, published January 5, 2026, orders the seasons Season 5, Season 2, Season 4, Season 3, then Season 1—matching this list’s endpoints but not its middle placements. Neither is an audience-wide consensus.
5. Season 5
The final season has the hardest job: conclude a sprawling conflict and give the original group a meaningful goodbye. Its strongest payoff is the emotional bookend. Netflix’s finale feature describes the coda returning the characters to the Wheeler basement for a final Dungeons & Dragons game, echoing the series’ opening. Matt Duffer said, “I think everyone agreed that this was the right moment to end the show,” while discussing the difficulty of saying goodbye to the characters and actors.

That sense of closure does not make every stretch equally effective. In TVLine’s assessment, a strong Will moment and a Volume 1 cliffhanger give way to perceived writing weaknesses in Volume 2; the middle and extended final run can feel less cohesive than the ending itself. The finale is affecting, but the season’s uneven progression puts it last in this ranking.
4. Season 2
Season 2 adds characters and relationships that become important to the series. Max and Billy complicate the Hawkins group, Bob brings warmth, and the pairing of Dustin and Steve is one of the show’s most enjoyable character combinations.
Rank #2
- In 1980s Indiana a group of friends witness supernatural forces and government exploits. In searching for answers, they unravel a series of mysteries.
The main drawback is structural. “The Lost Sister,” an episode that shifts away from the central Hawkins story, interrupts the season’s momentum. That pacing break matters in a ranking focused on cohesion. Season 2’s fourth-place position should not be mistaken for a claim that critics broadly rejected it: its Rotten Tomatoes critic score, 94% at access, is higher than the listed scores for Seasons 3, 4 and 5.
3. Season 4
Season 4 expands the show’s scale and horror, dividing its story among Hawkins, California and Soviet Russia. Vecna’s connection to Henry Creel deepens the mythology, while Eddie Munson becomes a memorable new presence. Max’s “Dear Billy” sequence is one of the season’s defining scenes, combining character stakes with supernatural threat.

The breadth also creates imbalance: the California storyline is weaker than the Hawkins and Russia strands in TVLine’s assessment. The long finale—144 minutes, according to that ranking—gives the season room for a major climax, though its length can test the pacing. Its ambitions and standout moments put it above Season 2, but the separated storylines keep it from the top two.
2. Season 3
Set in summer 1985, Season 3 leans harder into bright colors, broad comedy and the social life around Starcourt Mall. Robin Buckley is a valuable addition, and her coming-out conversation with Steve gives their friendship a distinctive emotional turn. The finale brings the season’s Hawkins and Starcourt threads together in a large-scale set piece.
Rank #4
- A love letter to the ‘80s classic genre films that captivated a generation, STRANGER THINGS is a thrilling drama set in the seemingly normal Midwestern town of Hawkins, Indiana.
The comic tone is deliberately broader than in the earlier seasons, which can be a strength or a distraction depending on the viewer. TVLine also notes complaints about Hopper’s characterization. Even with those trade-offs, the season’s energy and Robin’s introduction make it the strongest installment after Season 1 in this ranking. Rotten Tomatoes lists Seasons 3 and 4 at the same critic score—89% at access—so the distinction here is editorial, not reflected in that metric.
1. Season 1
The first season remains the clearest answer to “What is the best season of Stranger Things?” A missing child gives the story a simple, urgent spine, while the show moves among the children, teenagers and adults without losing its focus. Joyce Byers provides its emotional anchor: the supernatural mystery matters because the people searching for Will matter first.

Season 1 also benefits from the scale of a contained mystery. It introduces the Upside Down and its dangers without asking the audience to keep pace with the later seasons’ expanding mythology. Its balance of suspense, friendship, family drama and humor makes it the most complete standalone story. It also has the highest Rotten Tomatoes critic score of the five at access, 97%, though the case for placing it first rests on more than that number.

There is no single measure that settles the order. Rotten Tomatoes’ scores summarize critic approval; an argued ranking such as TVLine’s weighs particular strengths and weaknesses; and individual viewers may value horror, character arcs, comedy or closure differently. The figures are useful context, not proof that any one season is objectively best.
Netflix describes Stranger Things as complete at five seasons. In figures published in 2025, Netflix reported 42 episodes and more than 2,500 minutes across the series, more than 1.2 billion views for Seasons 1–4, and 102.6 million views for Season 5 Volume 1 in its first four weeks. These are Netflix’s company-published scale and viewership figures; they do not measure quality or establish a fan ranking.
Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike Wheeler, described the show’s broad appeal this way: “It’s a universal story because it appeals to all age groups. It appeals to people who grew up in the ’80s, and there’s that nostalgia for them, but also, it’s about friendship.”
Netflix released Season 5 in three parts: Volume 1, with four episodes, on November 26; Volume 2, with three episodes, on Christmas; and the finale on New Year’s Eve. Each volume was scheduled for 5 p.m. Pacific Time. Netflix’s Media Center described that rollout before release. Streaming availability can vary by territory and over time.
