The Lord of the Rings Extended Editions Returned to Theaters in January 2026

All three Lord of the Rings extended editions had theatrical dates in January 2026, but Fathom now lists no upcoming trilogy screenings. Here’s what the event included and what’s documented about the Blu-ray edition.

All three of Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings extended editions were scheduled for U.S. theatrical screenings on January 16–18 and January 23–25, 2026. That event has ended: Fathom Entertainment’s listing now says the trilogy has no upcoming releases. Here’s what the screenings offered and what the announcement means for fans looking to revisit Middle-earth.

What the 2026 theatrical event included

Fathom Entertainment and Warner Bros. announced the six-day return on December 5, 2025. Each film was scheduled twice, once on each weekend:

Film Scheduled screenings
The Fellowship of the Ring — Extended Edition January 16 and 23, 2026
The Two Towers — Extended Edition January 17 and 24, 2026
The Return of the King — Extended Edition January 18 and 25, 2026

The schedule covered all three films, but it is not evidence of new or continuing screenings. Fathom’s event listing, checked October 4, 2026, labels the Return of the King screening a past event and says there are no upcoming releases for the trilogy.

Formats and theater promotions were location-specific

Fathom said DBOX presentations were available at select theaters during the first weekend, January 16–18. Neither DBOX nor any other special presentation was promised at every location or showtime. Fathom CEO Ray Nutt’s announcement also mentioned 4DX, but the detailed schedule specified DBOX availability only where offered; those format references should not be taken to mean every screening had either option.

The event’s concession promotion was also limited. Participating AMC Theatres offered a collectible map tin with a quest magnet set; Regal and select independent theaters offered a “One Ring” design. The announcement said availability depended on participating locations and supplies, and advised checking with local theaters about availability and purchase limits. These were event promotions, not evidence that the items remain for sale.

How long was the extended-edition screening?

Fathom’s listing gives The Return of the King Extended Edition a runtime of 4 hours 13 minutes. That is the listed runtime for the third film alone, not for the full trilogy. The announcement’s “hours — and hours” prospect was literal: each film was presented as its own screening on a separate day.

What the announcement said about the trilogy’s legacy

In its December 5, 2025 announcement, Fathom described the broader six-film Lord of the Rings and Hobbit series as having earned $6 billion at the global box office and 17 Academy Awards. Those are franchise-wide context figures cited by Fathom, not box-office or awards results for the January 2026 screenings.

Ray Nutt, Fathom Entertainment’s chief executive officer, said: “As we celebrate the 25-year anniversary of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring in 2026, Fathom is proud to join with Warner Bros. to present each of these incredible films, with the extended editions from Peter Jackson and in 4DX for the enjoyment of fans old and new.”

Finding the extended editions for home viewing

Warner Bros.’ historical WB Insider Rewards eligible-title document lists The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Extended Edition on Blu-ray. It establishes that Warner Bros. documented an extended-edition trilogy Blu-ray, but it does not confirm current retail stock, packaging, format variations, digital-code inclusion, or present-day eligibility in any rewards program.

Before buying a physical copy, check the listing and package details to confirm that it is the extended edition, identify the format, and verify that all three films are included. The expired theater tickets and location-limited concession items are not current purchase options based on the event announcement.
