In a November 2025 interview, James Cameron said he and director Robert Rodriguez had committed to making at least one more Alita movie and were making progress. That is a statement of filmmaker intent—not evidence that 20th Century Studios or Disney has formally greenlit the film or begun production.
Is Alita 2 happening?
There is reason to take the idea seriously: Cameron publicly described a commitment with Rodriguez to make another Alita movie. But the available evidence does not establish a formal studio greenlight, a production start, or a release date. The clearest description is that the filmmakers have expressed commitment and reported progress while the sequel’s official production status remains unconfirmed.

What James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez have said
In a November 17, 2025 report, GamesRadar quoted Cameron saying: “Robert Rodriguez and I have sworn a blood oath to do at least one more Alita movie.” Cameron also said they were “thinking of an architecture that bridges to a third film” and “making progress on that.” These remarks point to plans for more than one potential follow-up, but they describe the filmmakers’ thinking, not an announced studio slate or a scheduled film.
The same report recalled an earlier statement from Rodriguez that they had not set a sequel for sure. The comments should therefore be read as evolving creator plans rather than confirmation that a movie is in production. Read GamesRadar’s November 17, 2025 report.

Has Alita 2 got a release date?
No release date is established by the available announcements. The current 20th Century Studios page located is for the original film, not a sequel announcement. Treat dates in fan-made trailers or unsourced predictions as speculation, not official news. The studio’s listing for the 2019 film is available at 20th Century Studios.
What is Alita: Battle Angel?
The proposed sequel would follow Alita: Battle Angel, the 2019 science-fiction film directed by Robert Rodriguez. 20th Century Studios lists the original as PG-13 with a runtime of 2 hours and 1 minute and a release date of February 14, 2019. Its premise follows Alita, who wakes in a future city with no memory and discovers her fighting abilities. See the studio’s film listing.

What to read while waiting for official news
The film was inspired by Yukito Kishiro’s Battle Angel Alita manga, according to publisher Penguin Random House. Readers who want the source material should look to the manga series, rather than treating the movie novelization as a continuation.
The source manga
Battle Angel Alita is the comic series behind the film and the best fit for readers interested in the story’s original source. Penguin Random House lists the paperback series at its Battle Angel Alita page. Current retailer availability, prices, and specific editions may vary.

The movie novelization
Alita: Battle Angel — The Official Movie Novelization retells the 2019 film in prose; it is not the source manga and does not establish or continue a sequel story. Penguin Random House Comics Retail lists it under ISBN 9781785658389: view the publisher listing.
