A separate 2026 proposal would have licensed Infowars intellectual property to The Onion temporarily; appellate orders blocked that proposal, and the latest located reporting, dated September 9, 2026, said the orders remained in place. Neither process established a completed takeover.
What happened to The Onion’s Infowars bid?
In November 2024, The Onion won a bankruptcy auction for assets of Free Speech Systems, Infowars’ parent company. Winning the auction did not make The Onion the owner: in December, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez rejected approval of the sale.
Judge Lopez criticized the auction process because it moved to final bids without giving bidders enough opportunity to compete further. He said, “This should have been opened back up, and it should have been opened back up for everybody,” according to Al Jazeera’s December 11, 2024 report. He rejected Alex Jones’s accusation of collusion. In March 2025, Lopez also declined to require another auction, according to Bloomberg Law.
How the auction bids were valued
The cash amounts and the trustee’s overall valuation were not equivalent measures. The Onion’s bid included a concession by Sandy Hook families who held judgments against Jones: they agreed to forgo some repayment so other creditors could receive more. The trustee counted that concession in valuing the bid.

Was the 2026 licensing proposal the same deal?
No. After the bankruptcy sale failed, The Onion pursued a separate proposal in April 2026 through a Texas state receiver. It sought a temporary license to use Infowars intellectual property, including trademarks, copyrights and domains. A license would have granted temporary use of those rights; it was not the 2024 auction purchase and did not amount to a completed acquisition.
A Texas appeals court temporarily blocked the proposed transfer, and a scheduled approval hearing became a status conference. On September 9, 2026, Law360 reporting carried by The Lawyers Daily said the Texas Supreme Court denied the Sandy Hook families’ request to dissolve the appellate orders stopping the receiver from taking control of Infowars and licensing its intellectual property to The Onion.

The latest located Associated Press report, published in August 2026, said the license remained on hold during Jones’s appeals. No later report located by October 4 established that the hold had been lifted. The reported status is therefore that the proposal remained blocked; this does not rule out a later court action that was not reported in those sources.

The available reporting does not establish a completed transfer of Infowars to The Onion. The 2024 sale was rejected, while the later proposed license was blocked. The Onion’s parody activity and Infowars-logo merchandise do not prove that it owns the Infowars brand.

The dispute over the assets is separate from the defamation judgments stemming from Jones’s false claims about the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting. In an August 2026 report, The Associated Press said a Texas judgment had been reduced from $50 million to $1.5 million; the same report described the separate Connecticut judgment as $1.4 billion. An AP explainer published August 22, 2026, gave the Connecticut amount as $1.25 billion. Those figures concern damages litigation, not ownership of Infowars.
