Alan Ruck attended the 81st Golden Globe Awards with a cane on January 7, 2024. A January 10 report by TMZ, citing sources close to him, said he had recently undergone a full knee replacement after dealing with arthritis—not because of the October 2023 car crash. The explanation was attributed reporting, not a direct statement from Ruck at the ceremony.
Why was Alan Ruck using a cane at the Golden Globes?
TMZ reported on January 10, 2024, that sources close to Ruck said he had undergone a full knee replacement about three and a half weeks before the ceremony. They attributed the surgery to arthritis and said it was the reason he used a cane at the Golden Globes. Ruck was not quoted giving that explanation himself in the coverage reviewed.
Ruck attended the 81st Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles on January 7 as a nominee for Succession. The official Golden Globes profile and awards announcement document his nomination and the ceremony.
Was the cane related to Ruck’s 2023 car accident?
The reporting does not support that connection. In comments to paparazzi after the crash, Ruck addressed his knee brace and said, “This isn’t from the accident,” according to the Los Angeles Times. The later report about his cane gave a separate explanation: recent knee replacement surgery following arthritis.
