Actor and environmental activist Edward Albert died of lung cancer at his home in Malibu on September 22, 2006, at age 55, according to a Los Angeles Times obituary citing his family. He was best known for his breakthrough role opposite Goldie Hawn in Butterflies Are Free (1972), and later devoted significant time to environmental and Native American causes.
How Edward Albert became known
Albert’s breakthrough came in Butterflies Are Free, the 1972 film adaptation of Leonard Gershe’s play. He played Don Baker, a blind young man who moves into his own apartment and meets a free-spirited neighbor played by Goldie Hawn. Turner Classic Movies says the performance earned Albert a Golden Globe for Most Promising Male Newcomer.

He continued acting in films and television after that early recognition. His screen credits included the war film Midway, the comedy-drama Guarding Tess, and television series. His career extended well beyond the role that first brought him to wider attention.

Albert served on the California Coastal Commission and was described by the Los Angeles Times as an outspoken environmental activist. Turner Classic Movies notes that environmental work occupied a significant part of his life from the 1980s.

His advocacy also included Native American causes and efforts to protect burial and sacred sites in Malibu. In a United Press International report, Larry Myers of the Native American Heritage Commission described Albert’s respect for Indigenous spiritual beliefs and his work to protect those sites. The report relayed Myers’s comments to the Los Angeles Times; they were not a statement by Albert himself.
