Its clipped line was first shared to mock her, then adopted by supporters as a political symbol. Other prominent references—from “Kamala is brat” to “Momala”—come from different sources and have different meanings. This guide covers major documented strands, not every joke that has circulated online.
Why did the coconut-tree clip go viral?
In May 2023, then-Vice President Kamala Harris spoke at a White House event swearing in commissioners for the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity for Hispanics. She was discussing how young people’s needs are connected to those of parents, grandparents, teachers and their wider communities.
Harris introduced an anecdote about her mother, who would ask, “You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?” Harris then said, “You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you.” The point was that a person’s circumstances and history matter; the joke took off when the striking delivery and coconut-tree question were clipped away from that argument. ABC News Australia and The Guardian describe the speech and the clip’s context.
The Republican National Committee’s GOP War Room account circulated a shortened version to mock Harris. In July 2024, as she emerged as a possible Democratic presidential nominee, supporters began using the coconut as an affectionate reference and a sign of enthusiasm. Hawaii Sen. Brian Schatz posted a photo of himself climbing a coconut tree with the words, “Madam Vice President, we are ready to help.” Colorado Gov. Jared Polis used coconut, tree and U.S. flag emojis. The same reference had shifted from an attack into a rallying symbol.

What does “Kamala is brat” mean?
“Brat” refers to Charli XCX’s album Brat and its distinctive lime-green look. After President Joe Biden withdrew from the 2024 presidential race and endorsed Harris, Charli XCX posted “kamala IS brat” on X. Fans made edits pairing Harris footage with music from the album, and the Harris campaign account adopted a bright-green, lowercase style associated with its cover. The reference connected the campaign moment to a pop-cultural aesthetic; it was not a formal campaign endorsement by the album or a political platform. TIME and Axios covered the connection.
Charli XCX described “brat” on TikTok as “a little messy” and “a little bit volatile,” as reported by TIME. The word’s use around Harris drew on the album’s cultural identity, rather than simply labeling the candidate.

Why do people quote “unburdened by what has been”?
Harris has repeatedly used the phrase “what can be, unburdened by what has been.” Compilations of her saying it turned the line into a recognizable meme. Some early circulation came from Republican accounts using the repetition to mock her; supporters later repeated or reclaimed it. There is no single established meaning shared by everyone who posts it: depending on the speaker and context, it can be a joke about a recurring phrase or a supportive slogan. TIME discusses the phrase’s circulation.
What are the Venn-diagram jokes about?
Harris has expressed a fondness for Venn diagrams, making them a recurring joke and reference. Campaign social content also used Venn-diagram imagery, where overlapping circles could frame political ideas or constituencies. So a Venn diagram in a Harris-related post may be teasing her enthusiasm for the charts, using them as a visual joke, or doing both. Axios covered the reference.

Is “Momala” a meme or a nickname?
“Momala” began as a family nickname, not an insult or a campaign slogan. Harris has said that after she married Doug Emhoff, his children, Cole and Ella, and Harris agreed they did not like “stepmom” and chose “Momala.” Its online use points to her relationship with her stepchildren and contributes to her public persona. TIME reported on the nickname.
What about Harris laugh clips and fan edits?
Harris’s laugh, along with older clips of her dancing or speaking, has appeared in social-media edits. These are a broad category of fan-made remixing, not one meme with a single canonical origin. An edit’s tone depends on its creator, the footage and how it is recut; one post or platform cannot stand in for everyone’s reaction. Some edits also intersected with the “brat” moment, but not every Harris remix uses that reference. Axios documented the broader wave of online references.

How the major references differ
| Reference | Source | How it has been used |
|---|---|---|
| Coconut tree | A 2023 speech anecdote about a mother’s question and the influence of family and community. | A clipped joke that supporters later used as an affectionate political symbol. |
| “Brat” | Charli XCX’s album and its lime-green visual identity. | A pop-culture reference adopted in fan edits and campaign styling in July 2024. |
| “Unburdened by what has been” | A phrase Harris has repeated in public remarks. | Mocking compilations and later supportive or playful reuse; meanings vary by post. |
| Venn diagrams | Harris’s stated enthusiasm for Venn diagrams. | A joke about her interest and a campaign visual for showing overlap. |
| “Momala” | A nickname chosen within Harris’s family after her marriage to Doug Emhoff. | A reference to her step-parent role and public persona. |
| Laugh and dance edits | Older public footage remixed by social-media users. | A loose family of fan edits, not one meme with a single origin. |
These references do not all mean the same thing. Some began as mockery, some as pop-culture play or family language, and several were later used affectionately. The coconut-tree clip especially loses its original point when it is detached from the surrounding speech.
