John Cena’s public relationship history includes two marriages and a high-profile engagement to Nikki Bella. The engagement ended in 2018; Bella later said they wanted different lives, including different expectations about having children. Here is the reported timeline, with explanations attributed to the people who gave them.

What happened with Elizabeth Huberdeau?

Biography.com reports the marriage and divorce dates, but provides little dependable detail about the relationship itself. Those public dates establish that the marriage ended in 2012; they do not establish a fuller account of why. There is not enough substantiated information here to characterize the marriage or assign private motives for the divorce.

Why did John Cena and Nikki Bella end their engagement?

Bella described the split as a difference in the lives they wanted. Speaking on Maria Menounos’ Better Together podcast in May 2020, she said: “Overall, we did have such an incredible relationship, it was just two people that wanted two different lives.” She also said that even when Cena was willing to have children, she felt that having them was not what he wanted.

Cena had made a different public statement earlier. In May 2018, after the split, he said he wanted to marry Bella and have a family with her, according to Us Weekly. These are statements made at different times by different people, not a definitive account of either person’s private thinking. Bella’s explanation is hers to give; Cena’s 2018 remarks document what he said after the breakup.

How did Cena meet Shay Shariatzadeh?

Biography.com says Cena met Shariatzadeh at a Vancouver restaurant in March 2019 while he was filming Playing with Fire. Us Weekly reports that they were publicly linked that month. The couple married in Tampa on October 12, 2020, followed by a second ceremony in Vancouver on July 15, 2022, according to Us Weekly’s account.

In a January 2022 appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Cena described marriage as effort: “It’s work to be the best partner and husband I can be to my loving wife.” That remark is a public description of his approach, not a window into the private details of the marriage.

What has Cena said about privacy?

After his highly public relationship with Bella, Cena spoke about setting boundaries. Us Weekly quoted him from a November 2019 appearance on Today: “Just because I went down one avenue in life doesn’t mean I’m going to repeat going down that avenue.” He also said it was “OK to establish boundaries.” The comments support a limited point: Cena publicly acknowledged a desire for privacy. They do not establish details about his current relationship beyond what the couple has chosen to make public.
