The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade began in 1924, but its famous character balloons arrived later: Felix the Cat was carried above the street on sticks in 1927, and helium-filled balloons followed in 1928. From their early silk construction and risky post-parade releases to wartime shortages and modern safety rules, the balloons’ history is also a story of changing technology and crowd management.
How the parade began—and when balloons arrived
Macy’s first Thanksgiving Day Parade took place in 1924. The Museum of the City of New York describes its route as running from 145th Street and Convent Avenue to Macy’s at 34th Street and Broadway. Zoo animals were among its attractions; oversized character balloons were not yet the signature spectacle.
That changed in 1927, when Felix the Cat became the first character balloon in the parade. There is an important distinction between Felix’s debut and the arrival of helium: Macy’s says the 1927 Felix was carried on sticks. Helium-filled balloons were introduced the following year, in 1928. Macy’s centennial account makes this distinction explicit, though some accounts compress the chronology and describe Felix as the first helium balloon.
Tony Sarg and the first helium balloons
Illustrator and puppeteer Tony Sarg designed the first series of helium balloons. PBS describes the early balloons as made from rubberized silk and produced by Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company at its factory in Akron, Ohio. Sarg was already associated with Macy’s through animated Christmas window displays, and his work helped turn a parade novelty into a form of larger-than-life puppetry above the street.

The early lineup quickly grew beyond Felix. Macy’s archive identifies Happy Dragon as another 1927 balloon, Mickey Mouse as a 1934 arrival, and Eddie Cantor as a 1934 balloon based on a real person. The archive also records a Santa balloon in 1940 and later familiar figures such as Kermit, Big Bird, Spider-Man, and Clifford. These examples show the range of subjects over time; they are not a complete year-by-year inventory.
Why Macy’s stopped releasing the balloons
In the early years, Macy’s released balloons at the end of the parade and offered a reward to people who found and returned them. The tradition ended after a balloon became entangled with an airplane. The Library of Congress recounts that in 1932 a released balloon wrapped around an airplane wing; the Museum of the City of New York also describes the aviation near-accident and says the balloons were thereafter deflated, crated, and stored for reuse.
The change was practical as well as safer: instead of sending enormous balloons off into the sky, Macy’s could recover them and bring them back for another parade.
World War II halted the parade
The parade did not take place in 1942, 1943, or 1944. The Museum of the City of New York cites a helium shortage and reports that Macy’s donated 250 pounds of rubber to the war effort. TIME’s historical account also describes the interruption as a result of shortages of natural rubber and competing demand for helium, including for Navy patrol blimps.

The 250-pound figure is the amount the museum reports Macy’s donated; it should not be read as the total quantity of rubber used in the balloons. The parade returned after the wartime interruption, with its balloons once again part of the annual event.
Weather and accidents changed balloon operations
Large balloons can be affected by more than wind. TIME reports that rainwater collected in Popeye’s hat in 1957 and spilled onto spectators, a reminder that a balloon’s shape can create problems in wet weather as well as in gusts.

A more serious incident occurred in 1997. TIME reports that the Cat in the Hat balloon was driven into a lamppost in winds of 43 mph. A metal arm struck two people; one woman suffered a fractured skull and remained in a coma for nearly a month. TIME says Macy’s agreed to size and wind rules after the crash.
Those are historical reports, not a statement of current operating thresholds. The sources cited here do not establish the parade’s present-day wind limits or other detailed safety procedures.

The balloon collection has drawn on cartoons, public figures, animals, and artistic collaborations. Macy’s archive documents its Blue Sky Gallery series with designs associated with Tom Otterness, Jeff Koons, Keith Haring, Takashi Murakami, Tim Burton, and KAWS. The program connects a familiar parade format with contemporary artists, while the broader history keeps returning to recognizable characters and popular culture.
Some claims about “firsts” need care. The Museum of the City of New York identifies Mrs. Katzenjammer as an early female character balloon, while TIME gives 1982 as the year Olive Oyl became the first female character represented in balloon form. Because those accounts may be using different definitions—or may conflict—the evidence does not support a single unqualified “first female balloon” claim.
What Macy’s has announced for the centennial parade
For the parade’s centennial in 2026, Macy’s announced that Felix would return and that the Blue Hippopotamus, which Macy’s says went unaccounted for after the 1931 parade, was also slated to return. These are announced plans, not confirmation that the appearances have already taken place. Macy’s said more details would follow.
Macy’s also announced a commemorative book, Let’s Have a Parade: Celebrating 100 Macy’s Parades, published by Weldon Owen, as part of its centennial offerings. Its announcement said the full assortment would launch in select stores in fall 2026; availability may change.
