The story’s supported opening sequence is double dungeon raid → Jinwoo gains the ability to level up → job-change quest and Shadow Monarch → search for the Elixir of Life. Spoilers: This guide covers the premise and major developments in the opening setup.
Solo Leveling’s story timeline, in order
The chronology below follows the opening events, not calendar dates. The official anime synopsis and Yen Press’s description of the first comic volume support this sequence.
- Gates and Hunters establish the world. Gates connect another dimension to the human world, and Hunters enter dungeons to fight monsters. The official anime introduction says Hunters ordinarily do not grow stronger or change rank after awakening.
- Sung Jinwoo starts as an E-rank Hunter. Yen Press describes him as a low-ranked Hunter who keeps joining dangerous raids under family and financial pressure.
- A raid leads to the double dungeon. Jinwoo’s party encounters a threat far beyond its ability. Yen Press identifies the first volume’s opening chapters as “Double Dungeon,” “Three Commandments,” and “Quest.”
- Jinwoo gains the ability to level up. Unlike other Hunters, he can grow stronger through a system. This exception drives the story’s central progression.
- He completes a job-change quest and becomes the Shadow Monarch. The official anime synopsis says the new role lets him command shadow soldiers.
- He pursues the Elixir of Life. The same synopsis gives Jinwoo an objective: gather materials for an elixir that may cure his ill mother.
This is a high-level sequence for the opening premise. The cited official and publisher material does not set out every later arc or the exact number of days between events, so a day-by-day or complete arc chronology cannot be verified from it.

Publication and adaptation timeline
These dates track the franchise’s real-world release history, not the time that passes in Jinwoo’s story.
| Date | Release or announcement | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 2016 | Web novel begins on KakaoPage | Crunchyroll News reports that Chugong’s original web novel began running on KakaoPage in 2016. This is a secondary report of the publication date. |
| March 2018–December 2021 | Manhwa adaptation runs | Crunchyroll News dates the comic adaptation’s run to this period. |
| July 2022 | Anime announced | Crunchyroll announced the adaptation at its Anime Expo 2022 industry panel, naming A-1 Pictures as the studio and Shunsuke Nakashige as director. |
| January 6, 2024 | Anime premieres on Crunchyroll | Crunchyroll announced a 9:30 a.m. Pacific premiere. This was the service’s scheduled premiere, not a claim that every region or dub launched at the same time. |
| August 2024 | Solo Leveling: Ragnarok sequel manhwa due to begin | Crunchyroll News reported the sequel manhwa was due to continue the franchise in August 2024. It is sequel material, not another arc in the original Jinwoo story. |
| January–March 2025 | Season 2, Arise from the Shadow | The official anime site identifies the season and lists finale-era episode materials from March 2025. |
| July 2026 | Beyond the System theatrical project announced | The official anime site’s July 2026 news list announces production. The cited material does not give a release date. |
How to follow the different Solo Leveling versions
The novel, comic, anime, side stories, and sequel are related but should not be treated as one interchangeable timeline.
- Original web novel: Chugong’s source narrative, reported by Crunchyroll News to have begun on KakaoPage in 2016.
- Manhwa (comic): An adaptation credited by Yen Press to Chugong, DISCIPLES (REDICE STUDIO), and h-goon. Its reported run was March 2018 to December 2021. Yen Press’s Solo Leveling comic Vol. 1 is the collected English comic edition: the publisher lists a full-color webcomic, paperback and digital formats, 320 pages, ISBN 9781975319441, a March 2, 2021 release date, and an Older Teen rating. Those details apply to that edition, not every territory’s release.
- Anime: An adaptation directed by Shunsuke Nakashige and produced by A-1 Pictures. Its pacing and episode order are adaptation-specific; the official site currently identifies Season 2 as Arise from the Shadow.
- Side stories: Yen Press lists Vol. 14 as “Side Stories 1” and Vol. 15 as “Side Stories 2.” Treat these as supplemental collected material rather than part of the opening main-story sequence.
- Ragnarok: A sequel manhwa announced as a continuation of the franchise. Keep it after the original story and its side stories rather than folding it into Jinwoo’s original timeline.
What the available sources establish—and what they do not
The sources establish the franchise’s broad publication sequence and the opening order of Jinwoo’s story. They do not establish exact fictional dates, a complete calendar of later events, or a reliable season-to-chapter equivalence. Anime episode timing should therefore not be used to infer how many days pass in the original story. For a detailed arc-by-arc reading order, consult the primary story chapters and identify the edition being followed.
