Bandit drives a black-and-gold Pontiac Firebird Trans Am presented as a 1977 Special Edition in Smokey and the Bandit. But the cars used during filming were likely 1976 models updated with 1977 styling. The screen identity is unmistakable; the exact configuration and fate of every production car are less certain.
What car did Bandit drive?
Bandit’s famous car is a Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, distinguished by its black paint, gold Special Edition graphics and oversized hood bird. In the film, it represents a 1977 model. Universal’s official film page describes the story: Bandit helps deliver 400 cases of beer from Texarkana to Atlanta within 28 hours while Sheriff Buford T. Justice pursues him. The Trans Am functions as the diversion car—and its role made it central to the film’s identity. Universal Pictures At Home
Was the movie car really a 1977 Trans Am?
Not necessarily by model year. The film came out in 1977, but PontiacV8 writer Rocky Rotella reports that production timing points to cars supplied as 1976 Trans Ams and updated with 1977-specific parts. Reported changes included the nose, hood, Shaker scoop and Snowflake wheels. That distinction separates the car the audience sees—a 1977-style Trans Am—from the likely donor cars used to build the filming fleet.
The exact count and equipment of the cars are not settled. Rotella notes that a May 27, 1977 newspaper interview quoted director Hal Needham as saying the production had nine Pontiacs, without establishing how many were Trans Ams. Classic Industries’ 2026 retrospective gives a more specific account: four 1976 Special Edition Trans Ams modified with 1977 parts, including rectangular headlights, a revised nose and grille, graphics, and “6.6 LITRE” scoop decals. It also describes the stunt cars as having 455 V8 engines. Those fleet and engine details are claims from that retrospective, not a definitive inventory corroborated by the less certain account from Rotella. What made the factory 1977 Special Edition distinctive?
The black-and-gold appearance was more than a paint choice. The Bandit Trans Am Club describes the 1977 Y82 Special Edition as having gold pinstriping and trim, gold bird graphics and Hurst roof panels. Its history identifies Y81 as the Special Edition without the hatch roof system.
Factory engine and transmission specifications should not be casually transferred to the movie cars. According to the club’s account, 1977 production Trans Ams were offered with Pontiac 400 variants or an Oldsmobile 403, with manual and automatic transmissions depending on configuration. That describes the production range, not proof of the engine or transmission in every car used on set.

How were the Trans Ams used in the film?
The cars appear in beauty shots and dialogue scenes, as well as driving sequences, chases, crashes and the bridge jump. Those varied demands help explain why the production needed multiple cars and why movie-car histories can be difficult to pin down: a vehicle used for a stunt may have a different configuration or fate from one used for close-ups.

Do any of the screen-used cars still exist?
No principal screen-used car is confirmed as a survivor in the cited accounts. Classic Industries’ retrospective says none of the four principal filming cars is confirmed to have survived, while PontiacV8 also describes uncertainty surrounding the fleet. The retrospective distinguishes Burt Reynolds’s promotional Trans Am from a car shown on screen. That is an attributed account, not a proven census of every Pontiac involved in production.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can you assess a claimed original Bandit-era Special Edition?
A black-and-gold appearance alone does not establish that a car is an original Y82 or Y81; replicas and altered cars exist. The Bandit Trans Am Club advises checking Pontiac Historical Services paperwork and examining visible and hidden identification numbers. For comparisons, separate the questions: model year and front-end parts, Y82 or Y81 roof configuration, engine and transmission, and the documentation supporting the car’s identity. Movie-specific modifications mean that a replica built to match the film need not have the same specification as an untouched showroom car.
