Her age and treatment details come from contemporaneous reporting and doctors’ accounts, not independently reviewed medical records.
What happened in 2019?
Mangayamma gave birth to twin girls in Guntur on September 5, 2019. The Washington Post reported her age as 74, citing the treating doctor’s account that her birth certificate showed that age; some other outlets described her as 73. The birth certificate has not been independently reviewed here, so 74 is best understood as the age reported by the treating doctor and in several reports. The Washington Post’s account described the delivery as a caesarean section.
Her husband was identified as E Raja Rao. Hindustan Times reported that the couple had been married for 57 years without children. That is a detail specific to their story, not a broader statistic. Hindustan Times reported that doctors said tests found Mangayamma medically fit, but news accounts do not provide a complete clinical record or the underlying evaluations.
How did the reported IVF treatment work?
A later Indian Express account said the couple visited Ahalya Nursing Home in 2018 and conceived through IVF using donor eggs and Raja Rao’s sperm. Those details were attributed to IVF specialist Dr S. Umashankar. The available reporting does not include the patient’s treatment records, so the precise protocol, medical eligibility assessment and clinical course cannot be independently established. The Indian Express feature also reported that the mother and babies needed hospitalization after delivery; it does not establish their long-term outcomes.

Why did the couple’s story involve stigma?
Contemporaneous coverage linked the couple’s wish for a child to the social pressure and stigma they said they experienced because they had no children. That framing concerns this couple’s reported experience; it should not be generalized to all childless people or to Indian society as a whole. The phrase “lifelong childless stigma” in headlines compresses a personal account, not a universal explanation for why people seek fertility treatment.
Why was the treatment controversial?
Some medical professionals raised ethical and safety concerns about providing assisted reproductive treatment at such an advanced age. On September 7, 2019, Times of India quoted Dr Jaideep Malhotra, then identified as president of the Indian Society of Assisted Reproduction, saying: “We appeal to our members and healthcare professionals in India to abstain from unethical malpractice, which may risk the lives of our patients, offsprings and future generations.” That was a professional’s stated view, not a legal ruling or a finding about this patient’s care. The Indian Express reported in September 2019 that the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) had issued Ahalya IVF clinic a notice seeking an explanation for providing assisted reproductive technology (ART) to Mangayamma. The later statutory ranges do not retroactively resolve questions about the treatment provided in 2019. Nor does this exceptional birth show that IVF at very advanced ages is generally safe, advisable or accessible.
