The official sources available for these five Japanese children’s anime confirm strong Japanese-facing homes, but they do not establish that every title is unavailable to U.S. viewers. Here is what each show is, and what the evidence says about finding it legally.
What “hard to find in the U.S.” means here
Japanese broadcast history or a listing in a Japan-facing catalog does not prove a show is absent from American services. A title may have separate editions, licensing by territory, or English-language materials without a widely promoted U.S. release. The clearest example is Shimajiro: a Netflix Japan page for one earlier iteration reports that it is unavailable in the viewer’s country, while an English Benesse page and a U.S. JustWatch listing also exist. Those facts describe different services and contexts, not a universal answer for the whole franchise.

Catalogs can change. NHK’s streaming information says platform lineups may differ and change without notice. Check the service’s current U.S. catalog for the exact title and edition before assuming it is available—or unavailable.
Five Japanese children’s anime to discover
Nintama Rantarō: ninja-school comedy with a long NHK history
NHK Enterprises says Nintama Rantarō began airing in 1993 and is based on Sōbē Amako’s manga. It follows three young trainees at a ninja school, making its premise an accessible mix of school comedy and ninja adventure.

NHK’s character portal listed selected series and specials on NHK Kodomo Park, Anime Times, FOD, Hulu, and U-NEXT as of July 17, 2026. These are Japanese-facing listings, not confirmation of U.S. access or a complete-series option. NHK notes that platform offerings differ and may change. Check NHK’s streaming information and confirm territory and episode coverage on the service itself. The series history and premise are documented by NHK Enterprises.
Shimajiro: preschool learning, with distinct franchise versions
Benesse describes Shimajiro: A World of WOW! as a Japanese preschool educational series running since 2012. That is not necessarily the same catalog entry as Shima Shima Tora no Shimajirō, an earlier iteration. Keep those titles distinct when searching: a result for one version does not establish the availability of every Shimajiro show or episode.

The Netflix Japan page for Shima Shima Tora no Shimajirō says the title is unavailable in the viewer’s country; that message depends on the viewer’s location and does not prove the franchise is unavailable throughout the United States. Benesse has an English-language franchise page, and a U.S. JustWatch listing exists for the earlier show, but neither fact alone confirms a current stream, English dub, subtitles, or complete-series access. Ojarumaru: an official Japanese presence, not a U.S. availability verdict
Ojarumaru appears through NHK Enterprises’ group mall and has episode listings on NHK On Demand. These official Japanese-facing pages establish a domestic presence; they do not establish whether the show is currently offered on an American service, whether episodes are subtitled, or whether a complete series is available.

Check the exact title and region on any service before subscribing. The relevant pages are NHK Enterprises’ Ojarumaru page and NHK On Demand.
Chiikawa: manga adaptation with listed home-video releases
Chiikawa adapts illustrator Nagano’s manga. Its official site lists episodes, goods, and Blu-ray/DVD volumes with releases from 2023 through 2025, as well as current site news. A U.S. distributor page also surfaced in English-facing search results, so it would be misleading to call the title unseen or unavailable without checking the particular format and current catalog.

The official site’s disc listings do not, by themselves, confirm U.S. availability, playback-region compatibility, or English audio and subtitles. Check those details on the specific release before buying. Start with the official Chiikawa site.
PUI PUI Molcar: a Japanese property whose U.S. status needs a direct check
PUI PUI Molcar has an official site with streaming and goods sections and promotes both its television series and a film. Those pages establish official Japanese property information, but do not settle whether the show or film is currently licensed in the United States, or which language options and episodes a U.S. service offers.

Look up the series and film separately, and verify the country setting, audio, subtitles, and completeness on any listing. The official PUI PUI Molcar site is a starting point for the franchise’s own information.

- Search the exact title and version. Try the Japanese romanization and, where relevant, the alternate franchise or series name. A listing for one Shimajiro iteration does not cover all of them.
- Set the territory to the United States. A Japanese service page, or a message saying a title is unavailable in your country, is not a U.S. catalog determination.
- Confirm what the listing includes. Check whether it covers the television series, a film, selected episodes, or a complete run; then look for English subtitles or dubbing in the service’s own details.
- Check the date before acting. Rights and catalog lineups change. Confirm current availability directly with the platform rather than treating an older listing as a promise.
- For discs, verify the edition before purchasing. Confirm that the U.S. listing is genuine and that its language options and region compatibility meet your needs. An official Japanese Blu-ray/DVD listing alone does not answer those questions.
Why these shows may be unfamiliar to American families
The five examples do not represent one single kind of children’s anime. Shimajiro is explicitly positioned as preschool educational entertainment; Nintama Rantarō centers on young ninja trainees; and Chiikawa adapts a manga. Their intended ages, formats, and Japanese-language contexts differ. A show can be well established in its home market yet remain less visible to U.S. families when its official information and distribution are centered on Japanese catalogs.
That difference in visibility is more accurate than saying American children will never see these shows. For any one title, the practical answer depends on the exact version, territory, language options, and current rights.
